Flossie Wright’s physical fitness had been poorer than hers before, and she hadn’t spent more time than Becca Reyes, but now she far outstripped Becca Reyes in terms of physical strength...
It was an issue of method, but it was also a psychological one.
After pausing, Jocelyn Carrington frowned and said, "Does my departure bring her achievements?"
"At least it’s useful."
Flossie replied nonchalantly.
"You—" Jocelyn Carrington ground her teeth, raised her hand, and then slammed it down again, "Never mind, I still have a chance."
Being eliminated wasn’t the end of her military career.
There was still plenty of time.
It wasn’t in her nature to seek death or panic just because she left this place.
Even though someone like Flossie could stay and she, a vanguard, was eliminated, which made her feel exceedingly unfair, she wasn’t without opportunity.
The one who laughs last is the true victor.
Even if she was eliminated this year, next year, she could still sign up for the selection.
Besides, leaving here didn’t necessarily mean that other roads were closed.
Perhaps there would be a new world after turning the corner?
Nobody could say for sure.
After being with Becca Reyes for so long, her thoughts seemed to have become more positive as well.
"Let’s go in."
Seeing that she had come to terms with it, Flossie smiled and turned to walk inside.
When she saw her move, Jocelyn Carrington hurriedly caught up to her, leaned in close to her ear, and whispered with excitement, "Calvin Ramos is inside."
After a brief pause, Flossie responded indifferently.
And then she entered the tent.
Jocelyn Carrington stood frozen in place.
A moment later, she strode into the tent.
Inside the tent, two Medical Staff members, who had been treating injuries, had set down their medical tools.
Calvin Ramos was standing in front of them, inquiring about the condition of Becca Reyes and Stuart Weston.
The others, who were helping, were leisurely packing up, totally unconcerned about the two injured patients as they chatted amongst themselves.
There were a few more patients lying inside the tent.
The beds of Becca Reyes and Stuart Weston were next to each other, both of them in a coma, lying motionlessly on the beds.
"What’s the situation?"
Jocelyn Carrington quickly moved closer.
The two doctors had no intention of speaking, and they glanced at Calvin Ramos.
After a brief hesitation, Calvin Ramos thought for a moment and said, "Becca Reyes has a high fever, but probably there will be no problems once it subsides, Stuart Weston is exhausted, and a period of rest should be sufficient."
"What if she doesn’t recover from the fever?"
Jocelyn Carrington pointed to Becca Reyes, her concern evident.
She wasn’t really worried about Becca Reyes’ illness; after all, there were so many Medical Staff members here, and then there was the military hospital at the Military District.
They surely wouldn’t let Becca Reyes be tortured to death.
However, she would have to pack up and leave at the latest by tomorrow, and there were still things she hadn’t finished dealing with.
"Depending on the situation, if the fever doesn’t subside by tonight, she’ll be sent to the hospital."
The peri-menopausal Medical Staff member looked at her and made a casual remark.
What they needed to do had been done; how things would turn out from there was left to fate.
Jocelyn Carrington felt dissatisfied with their attitude, but upon recalling their earlier diligence in treatment, her annoyance gradually faded.
As long as they did their jobs wholeheartedly, their manner after work, no matter how unpleasant, made it hard for anyone to take offense.
After all, they were Medical Staff, responsible for treating the wounded, and not for pleasing her, right?
Calvin Ramos was keeping vigil within the tent.
Jocelyn Carrington felt somewhat bored, lacking the patience to stay, and so she turned around and went out for a walk.
Among the new recruits, in other bedrooms, she had one or two acquaintances, and with this round over, they were mostly going to leave.
Heading to different places, they might not have the chance to see each other again, so they got together to chat.
As for Flossie...
She had just settled down when she went to take care of Belinda Nichols.
It wasn’t until four in the afternoon that Belinda Nichols returned.
She’d had some bad luck, encountering poisonous bugs on the road and getting bitten, leaving half her body numb.
She endured the pain and walked back.
Upon arrival, she was immediately taken for emergency treatment.
Flossie Wright had a splitting headache.
Nine o’clock in the evening.
Stuart Weston had awoken long ago.
Becca Reyes woke up once or twice in a daze until she was fully awake, and by then, it was very late.
The moment she opened her eyes, she saw people coming and going and heard a cacophony of noise around her. It took a while before her hearing gradually returned.
Soon, a voice floated to her ears.
Somewhat familiar.
Becca Reyes thought for a while until she saw the face appear before her eyes and she snapped back to reality.
Flossie Wright.
"Hmm," Becca Reyes blinked and looked at her, before hoarsely speaking after a long pause, "Give me a cup of water."
Raising an eyebrow, Flossie Wright had just turned around when she saw a cup of water being handed to her.
Taken aback, she looked up and saw Calvin Ramos standing in front of her.
Flossie Wright unceremoniously took it.
By then, Becca Reyes had been helped up by Stuart Weston and after scanning the surroundings in a daze, she caught sight of Calvin Ramos standing by the bed. Her eyes flashed momentarily, like touching a flame, and she instinctively retracted her gaze.
Flossie Wright brought the water to her face.
"Thank you."
Hesitating for a moment, Becca Reyes took the cup.
It was warm water, neither cold nor hot, just the right temperature.
But her mind was suddenly a mess, torn for a while before she finally lowered her head and slowly took a few sips.
"You can go first."
Standing up, Flossie Wright faced Calvin Ramos and spoke directly.
Calvin Ramos frowned as he looked at her.
Flossie Wright was perfectly composed.
After a moment, Calvin Ramos ultimately nodded, gave Becca Reyes a deep look, then turned and walked out of the tent.
At that moment—
Jocelyn Carrington walked in.
"Awake, huh?"
Seeing Becca Reyes, Jocelyn Carrington’s voice was clear as she quickened her steps to approach.
Becca Reyes nodded.
"Hey, hey, hey," Stuart Weston waved at her, reminding her, "Keep your voice down, she can’t stand loud noises."
Jocelyn Carrington rolled her eyes at him.
Soon, she looked at Flossie Wright and casually walked towards her, making a quiet gesture.
Flossie Wright shrugged.
"I’m going to sleep."
Telling Becca Reyes, Flossie Wright prepared to leave.
A crisp nod from Becca Reyes, with no intention to detain her.
Flossie felt somewhat guilty, as she guessed she must have been by Becca’s side for quite a while. How could she have the face to keep her staying longer?
However, what she didn’t know was that it was Stuart Weston and Calvin Ramos who had truly kept vigil. Flossie Wright’s time had been mostly spent on Belinda Nichols.
After all, Belinda Nichols was alone in the world.
