Leading by a step ahead, Nancy Phillips turned slightly to the side and then said in a calm tone, "We’ve received notice from above, we are off for three days and can get our leave permit at noon."
"Leave permit?" Flossie Wright raised an eyebrow.
The existence of leave permits meant that they could spend the next three days outside the Base, instead of staying in.
Nancy Phillips nodded affirmatively.
This was their first real combat mission, and after the life-threatening experience, they naturally wanted to go home and reunite with their families, so a three-day leave was granted.
Technically, their leaves should be strictly scheduled according to military ranks, but there were always exceptions.
They had been through life and death, so they deserved some privileges.
After thinking for a moment, Flossie decided to put the matter of the leave permit out of her mind.
She had no particular reason to go out. Although it could be relaxing, in a city without acquaintances, there was not much fun to be had. It would be better to take the time to enhance her physical fitness.
Any improvement, no matter how small, was worthwhile; skills were developed gradually, not overnight.
"By the way, that Janice Wood," as they reached the second floor, Nancy Phillips paused and looked at Flossie, continuing, "she went back. She had been repeating a year to prepare for the college entrance exam, and the results should be out by now."
Flossie responded.
She didn’t turn her phone on often and occasionally received messages from Janice Wood, but they didn’t keep in touch much, and Janice wouldn’t reveal much about herself.
Becca Reyes had mentioned this to her before.
About Janice Wood, they didn’t talk much, and afterwards, they walked in silence to the fourth floor to see the psychologist.
This took up the entire morning.
By noon, Flossie was finally free, while Nancy Phillips, who had finished ahead of time, had already disappeared.
Descending to the third floor, Flossie stopped briefly at the stairwell, glanced towards the corridor’s rooms, and then headed toward Jessie Grain and Ella Pemberton’s hospital room, relying on her memory.
Jessie Grain’s room was empty.
Probably couldn’t sit still and had gone wandering around with all her injuries.
Flossie then went straight to the door of Ella Pemberton’s hospital room.
The door to the hospital room wasn’t fully closed, leaving a slight gap. Flossie was about to knock when she heard a stern voice inside.
"Now that you’ve lost the child, do you still want to stay in this godforsaken place?!"
It was a man’s voice, deep and serious, yet trying to suppress his anger.
The motion of Flossie’s hand about to knock on the door paused abruptly.
"I want to stay here." Ella Pemberton’s voice was weak but resolute and indisputable.
"This matter isn’t up to you to decide."
"But, Comrade Evan Alvarez, you are now infringing on my personal freedom."
"Comrade Ella Pemberton, I am indeed infringing on your great personal freedom. Are you going to sue me?!"
Ella Pemberton fell silent immediately.

Clearly, she didn’t have an argument against such unreasonableness.
A moment later, Flossie curled the corner of her lips and withdrew her hand.
She pressed down on her cap and placed her hands in her pockets, ready to leave.
"Flossie Wright!"
A very familiar voice.
Flossie stopped in her tracks, her eyes beneath the brim of her hat lifting slightly to take in the approaching figure.
It was Edward Milton, the Captain of the SWAT team with whom she had worked the day before.
"Captain Milton."
Flossie called out to him but omitted the courtesy of a military salute.
"Here to see your Captain?" Standing firm in his SWAT uniform, Edward Milton asked her in clear and measured tones.
Flossie Wright nodded.
"Then go in."
After glancing at her, Edward Milton patted her shoulder.
Clearly, he had seen the moment when Flossie Wright stood at the door but didn’t enter.
Without another word, Edward Milton pushed open the door and immediately led Flossie Wright inside.
Inside, there was none of the argument Flossie Wright had expected. Instead, a calm and peaceful scene unfolded.
Ella Pemberton, wearing a hospital gown, sat at the head of the bed with a pillow behind her.
Next to her bed, a man in a suit sat askew. His appearance wasn’t outstanding, but he exuded a gentle, scholarly air.
He held an apple in his hand and was peeling it with a fruit knife, clumsily yet attentively.
"Captain Edward."
Already aware of the noise outside, Ella Pemberton greeted them as they entered, her smile somewhat forced.
"Came to see how you’re doing."
Setting aside the fruit basket in his hand, Edward Milton, report still in hand, walked straight to Ella Pemberton’s bedside.
As he approached, he could clearly feel the hostility emanating from the suited man.
Edward Milton was a blunt man. Although he felt it, he didn’t pay much attention.
After exchanging a few pleasantries with Ella Pemberton, he steered the conversation toward the purpose of his visit.
Unbeknownst to him, the man peeling the apple at the side was growing increasingly livid.
Watching this scene, Flossie Wright found it amusing. She leaned against the doorframe, silently observing.
However, what Edward Milton said next captured Flossie Wright’s full attention.
"...Based on the information from the prisoners, we went to search for their remaining accomplices, only to find someone had beaten us to it, killing them all in a brutal and inhumane manner."
Edward Milton’s expression grew even more serious as he spoke.
"All dead?"
Upon hearing this, Ella Pemberton looked up in surprise.
"Yes," Edward Milton nodded gravely, "fourteen of them, none survived."
Fourteen of them, none survived?
The ones capable of such cruelty weren’t from their police or military forces, so who was it that found and killed them first?!
This was—
A classic move of the underworld!
At this thought, Flossie Wright’s mind raced.
Suddenly overwhelmed, she stood silently by, listening to Edward Milton and Ella Pemberton’s conversation, even neglecting to note Evan Alvarez’s discomfort.
After about ten minutes of conversation, as Edward Milton prepared to leave, Flossie Wright said goodbye to Ella Pemberton and made an excuse to depart.
Stepping out of the hospital, Flossie Wright checked the time; it was almost past lunchtime.
But she had no time to go to the canteen; she quickened her pace to the Dormitory.
Dormitory 307.
She entered, closing the door behind her, and went over to her desk.
Taking her fully charged phone, she powered it on.
She called Perry Reed’s number.
He picked up on the other end.
"That issue with the Mercenary Corps, was it your doing?" Flossie Wright asked in a cold voice, brows tightly furrowed.
