"When are you two planning on getting married?"
Halfway through a quiet dinner, Regan Wright, who had been focusing on Flossie Wright and Glenn Hutchinson, suddenly posed this question.
In Regan’s view, Flossie bringing Glenn back at this time meant that their relationship must have progressed to a serious stage. Both of them were of marriageable age, and the sooner they got married, the sooner he could stop worrying about any "accidents" happening.
Besides, Helen Wright’s marriage was under discussion. If Flossie, the older sister, remained unmarried, it might lead to gossip.
Flossie paused slightly while picking up her chopsticks. Then she squinted at Glenn, signaling he should handle this.
However, she was too trusting of Glenn. As soon as she felt relieved and left everything to him, Glenn responded with something unexpected—
"We’re discussing it."
Flossie almost choked on her food.
Even Merry Otiz, couldn’t help but look at them more carefully, unable to hide her astonishment.
Dicussing what? Marriage?
Unsayingly, she connected this discussion to their previous encounter at the shopping centre, when Glenn said they would go to get their marriage license. Merry’s face sank, her eyes, full of a mix of jealousy and evaluation, sourly moving between Flossie and Glenn.
Ever since knowing Glenn’s identity, Merry had inevitably compared Benjamin Murphy with him. In terms of family background, Benjamin could not compete with Glenn; in terms of status, Benjamin, being an ordinary businessman, could not match the mysterious identity behind Glenn; in terms of appearance and temperament...well, it wasn’t even a competition.
As both were daughters of the Wright family, Merry naturally wished her daughter would marry better. Since her daughter had set her heart on Benjamin Murphy, Merry could only hope that Flossie and Glenn would break up. So when she heard they had "broken up" last time, despite her concern for Benjamin’s several shops, she was actually overjoyed that Flossie had lost Glenn as her supporter.
Suddenly discussing marriage?!
"We decided we’ll plan for marriage when I leave the Forces and he’s still alive."
Before Regan Wright and Merry Otiz could react further, Flossie put down her chopsticks and casually added this sentence, alleviating the surprise caused by Glenn’s statement.
After she finished speaking, Flossie shot Glenn a warning glance. She didn’t want him to cause any unnecessary trouble. If things were to really progress to that stage, it would require a lot of explanation. It was better to put a limit to such matters.
Glenn did well to heed her warning, agreed with Flossie’s addition and did not say anything more.
However, while they had quietly reached an agreement on their end, Regan Wright and Merry Otiz, as elders, were struck dumb by Flossie’s statement.
They could understand if she wanted to wait until leaving the Forces, but why add that part about "he’s still alive"?
How could she speak so casually and leisurely about such an ominous matter?
After a moment of stunned silence, Regan awkwardly cleared his throat, then explained to Glenn, "Glenn, don’t mind her. She has never been good with words."
"Actually, I quite agree with her."
To their surprise, Glenn’s expression showed no sign of change, and he agreed with her statement. When he turned to look at Flossie, there was no resentment in his eyes, only a calm, as if they had really discussed this issue in the past.
In fact, death was a constant spectre for them.
Every mission carried risks, even those of the lowest difficulty could still lead to danger. There were even accidental deaths during training. Despite living in such a stable society, their lives held no guarantees, especially for those like Glenn or Flossie who was currently participating in the Marine Corps recruit selection training.
Winsley Scott was a classic example.
Who would have thought that during that rescue mission, comrades would have fallen?
Even Winsley himself wouldn’t have expected it.
That morning when he was discussing Janice Wood’s birthday with Flossie, how could he have known that just a few hours later, he would never see the world again?
Life can be extinguished in an instant, so fast that even a simple "Happy Birthday" couldn’t be said.
This is how they lived, under unpredictable dangers that could take their lives at any moment, through various accidents.
Flossie and Glenn’s statements did not seem like a joke at all. It unexpectedly made the atmosphere awkward again, adding another layer of worry for Regan Wright.
Only now did it dawn on him that Glenn had a distinctive identity. If their lives were indeed in danger, was entrusting Flossie’s life to Glenn really the right choice?
"What about your family?"
After much hesitation, Regan finally asked about the Hutchinson family’s opinion.
With Flossie’s reputation, he wasn’t sure what the Hutchinson family would think of her.

Glenn blinked before Flossie could glance at him and quickly responded, "I’m taking her to meet them tomorrow."
