The distance from the hospital to the cookhouse wasn’t far, so their phone call didn’t last long. But even a few minutes was enough for two non-talkative people to clarify things.
At first, people would frequently worry about Janice Wood’s state of mind. Bard Walker and Nathan Foster had both spoken to her, mainly doing ideological work. But as time went on, although Janice was more of a silent type, she never fell behind in training. Her performance got better and better, so Bard Walker and Nathan thought Janice was focusing on her training, using it to numb her pain.
They thought, that was the end of it, so they lessened their attention towards her afterward.
Even Becca Reyes thought that in a few days Janice would step out from her shadows. Although she trained with Janice occasionally, she no longer paid significant attention to the incident with Winsley Scott.
So, no one expected that Janice, at such a juncture, would suddenly jump off a cliff.
She wasn’t discovered until after lunch. Her roommates didn’t care much about her presence, they didn’t even know if she had eaten. It wasn’t until Nathan took roll call at the assembly point that her disappearance was discovered, and then they realized something was wrong.
Nathan activated all the new recruits to search for her, and finally found Janice at the bottom of the cliff where they trained that morning.
Luckily, the cliff wasn’t very high and the tide had receded at that time, so Janice was not washed away.
When they rescued Janice, she was barely alive. After several hours of hard work, the doctors finally pulled her back from the brink of death.
However, though Janice had survived, Nathan faced trouble. He didn’t manage to take good care of his soldiers, and punishment was inevitable, regardless of whether the soldiers were injured during training or deliberately hurt themselves.
As for Janice, she was unlikely to stay there any longer.
"We’ll talk about it when I come back."
Afetr listening to Becca Reyes’ account, Flossie Wright didn’t express any opinion. She gently massaged her forehead, which had started to ache, and ended the call with Becca Reyes without saying much.
Next, Flossie borrowed a laptop from Dian Deacon and decisively booked a flight back home online.
"You’re going back to the Forces tomorrow?"
Olivia Hamilton, after hearing the news, ran out from the kitchen. Her face was full of surprise and her soft eyes were filled with reluctance. Her eyes turned teary, as if shrouded in a layer of mist, ready to drop tears at any time.
Today, when Flossie came back, Olivia assumed she could spend a few more days with Flossie, and she was delighted. However, within just a few minutes, Flossie suddenly decided to go back.
Flossie frowned at her, then gently nodded.
If it was an ordinary matter, perhaps she would reconsider and stay with Olivia for a few more days. But this matter wasn’t really up for negotiation.
She couldn’t help Janice with anything. The so-called mental knots can only be effectively untied by oneself, hence she didn’t think about helping too much.
However, there were some things that she has to clarify.
"Let her go," Dian Deacon comforted, patting Olivia’s shoulder. His voice was unavoidably heavy, "Anyway, we got this vacation for nothing. You will see her more in few days, don’t worry."
Olivia, her eyes filled with tears, sighed and finally nodded.
Since Flossie decided to go back after the call, something must have happened in the Forces. Olivia wasn’t a clueless person and naturally supported Flossie’s decision.
However, while she accepted this sudden fact, she kept herself busy. In a blink of an eye, she went back to the kitchen to prepare late-night snacks for Flossie.
While Flossie was preparing to eat her late-night meal, Olivia dragged Dian Deacon out in the middle of the night for an errand. The reason was not explained, but Flossie had guessed it fairly accurately. So when Olivia and Dian came back, their hands were filled with bags, all full of things Flossie used to like eating.
And those items that needed to be cooked were all brought into the kitchen by her. It seemed she intended to work overnight.
In the face of Olivia’s performance, Flossie was somewhat at a loss for words. But in the end, prompted by Dian’s gaze, she let Olivia do as she pleased.
That night, both Olivia Hamilton and Dian Deacon didn’t get a wink of sleep.
Naturally, Olivia was busy in the kitchen. As an excellent husband, Dian resigned to assisting Olivia tirelessly, with no hint of slack.
So, the next morning when Flossie woke up, she saw a table full of home-cooked dishes and a lot of packed food. The whole living room was crammed with food.
"Flossie, come and eat first. Later, Uncle Dian will take you to the airport."
Olivia, who only had less than two hours of sleep, immediately got energized at the sight of Flossie. She beckoned Flossie and then set the table with chopsticks and bowls.
Flossie nodded. But just as she was about to walk over, the doorbell rang.
"Ding dong——ding dong——"
"I’ll get the door."
Dian came out from the kitchen, untying his apron as he walked towards the door. But as soon as he opened the door, he was slightly taken aback, looking at the stranger standing outside with confusion.
Then Dian, including Olivia and Flossie in the living room, all heard a calm and pleasant voice——
"Hello, I’m here to pick up Flossie."
