Today was a national holiday, but there were still some people working overtime. However, at this hour, they had all gone home, leaving only a few solitary workers scurrying about on each floor.
Compared to the bustling streets outside, the entire building seemed to have fallen into eerie silence. A heavy atmosphere spread through the air, as if something was about to happen at any moment.
Flossie Wright observed the numbers on each elevator before choosing one to ride. However, she got off as soon as it reached the third floor.
After pressing the buttons for all the elevators to descend, Flossie was about to head for the stairs. Just as she was turning around, she noticed a shadow fall across her path. Instinctively, she stopped in her tracks, her hand tense within her sleeve.
However, when she looked up, she found herself staring into a familiar handsome face with clear-cut features and deep, black eyes. The man exuded an austere air in his simple black suit, accentuating his tall and straight figure. His strong presence was immediately apparent.
Glenn Hutchinson had just reached the elevator when he felt a murderous air approaching. Raising an eyebrow, he followed the line of sight down and saw a familiar figure standing before him. He squinted and observed her, recognizing the face that was partialy covered by a hat, a sense of realization shining in his eyes.
It was just like her to be hostile at the very sight of him.
What was she doing here?
Before either could voice their doubts, a sound of a metal bucket hitting the railing echoed from the nearby stairs. It clearly happened by accident, but in the silent space around them, it came out extremely clear. At the same time, they could hear rhythmic footsteps and a hummed tune.
Without any hesitation, Flossie headed straight for the stairs.
Glenn watched her retreating back with a furrowed brow, then, without a second thought, followed her.
From the moment Flossie spotted the sniper till now, it had only been about three minutes. She had observed that no one entered or exited the main door. This meant the sniper was still in the building. It was unlikely for him to have a fixed identity in such an emergent situation, so he could only have entered with a disposable identity.
The size of a sniper rifle was substantial. It wasn’t something that could be easily carried around. Moreover, Flossie had spotted the sniper, so any sensible person would hide their rifle to avoid getting caught while exiting the building.
This meant he might delay a bit, which was the perfect opportunity for Flossie to catch him.
There were only two routes – the elevator and the stairs – to descend from the upper floors. So, Flossie decided to cut off both of his escape routes.
If the man was confident enough, he would definitely take the elevator. If he was careful, he would choose the stairs. Given that he had aimed the rifle at her but never fired, he was likely the latter.
Of course, for Flossie, it was a gamble.
After all, she was alone at the time, and it was impossible to lock down the whole building. She could only rely on her experience to respond to the situation. Often, she only needed a portion of experience and a bit of intuition.
And, all the facts proved that Flossie’s guess was correct.
Just as she pushed open the door to the stairs, she saw a young man, carrying a bucket and mop, descending the stairs while humming a popular song. If he hadn’t been nervously glancing around, he wouldn’t have attracted any suspicion.
