The sun was high in the sky, and sunlight filtered through the branches, occasionally touching the skin yet still imparting no warmth.
Becca Reyes’ clothes were still wet, shaking from the cold that enveloped her entire body; even her ability to move had slowed down considerably.
After nearly two hours of wandering without encountering a single person, Becca’s strength began to wane. She decided to find a spot to rest properly and regain her energy.
Just as she had located a good hiding spot and rounded the corner to inspect it, she froze.
Her chosen location was behind a tree, surrounded by dense underbrush.
Yet, behind the tree, a figure was already lying there.
The person was dressed in blue army combat gear, lazily reclining on the grassland, somewhat concealed by the grass but not deliberately hidden; a clear outline was visible at just a glance.
Was he dead or...
Thinking this, Becca Reyes began to feel uncertain.
After all, according to her normal way of thinking, those involved in the exercise were generally tense and serious. She had never seen anyone so indolent, so dispassionate.
Especially since there were no guards around him.
If he wasn’t dead, how could he be so at ease?
Becca Reyes cautiously took a few steps closer.
As she pondered and explored, a cold, clear voice suddenly broke the silence.
It carried the jungle’s fresh aura, crisp and pleasant to hear.
However, starting the greeting with "hey" didn’t seem too friendly.
Becca quickly halted her footsteps, then lifted her eyes to look at the person lying ahead.
Having moved closer, the details of the reclining figure became even more apparent.
It was indeed someone from the blue army.
The person lay still with the helmet tilted slightly down, partially concealing his brows and eyes. Shadows fell across his eyes, making it difficult to discern his emotions, casting a dim veil over them.
Light streamed through the gaps in the leaves and landed on his chin, wrapping him in a soft halo.
His face was painted with military camouflage, obscuring his features, but the contours of his face indicated that he was quite handsome.
After a few glances, Becca quietly raised her hand, reaching for the gun at her waist.
If the person was a living member of the blue army—
Then, she had to eliminate him!
"I’d advise you not to draw your gun."
Just as her fingers brushed the gun, that cool, nonchalant voice drifted over again.
Becca saw his lips move slightly and confirmed that he was the one who spoke.
For some reason, Becca’s caution escalated; her fingers stiffened, unmoving, as her gaze locked onto him, asking sternly and carefully, "Who are you?"
The man did not respond immediately.
After a pause, he suddenly sat up from the ground, slightly bending his right leg, resting his right elbow on it, while his left hand reached up to grasp the edge of his helmet and adjusted it slightly.
"Asking me?"
Turning his head, the man looked over, his careless words falling softly.
Becca was somewhat startled by the arrogance in the man’s eyes, his pride and confidence seeping from his bones, as if he didn’t take her seriously at all.
Something felt off.
But, Becca couldn’t pinpoint it.
Clearly, she had the upper hand; she could easily take him down in a second or two if she just pulled out her gun.
Yet, he seemed unguarded, and arrogant people often weren’t very cautious around her.
Facing him, Becca felt fairly confident.
Still, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was amiss.
What was it?
Unresolved in her thoughts, Becca stared at him and affirmed.
"Sorry, I don’t want to answer," he replied lazily, his attitude both arrogant and calm.
He withdrew his gaze, no longer looking at Becca.
He prepared to get up.
"Don’t move!"
Seeing his movement, and catching a glimpse of the gun at his waist, Becca immediately barked out a command and drew her gun from her waist.
She disengaged the safety and aimed—
A faint sound followed.
Becca felt an intense blow to her chest.
Suddenly, a red smoke billowed up.
