Patrick Morrison, as a rugged man who grew up in the Northeast, was generally hearty and bold. But now, upon being queried by Rowdy Brightwill, he became completely flustered. His normally dark skin somehow took on a slight blush.
Unbearably, his dark past was being brought up again, and Patrick didn’t feel at ease in the slightest.
"What about her caught your eye in the first place?"
Rowdy Brightwill didn’t seem to understand, he moved closer, his eyebrows furrowed deeper, as if he was really determined to get an answer from Patrick Morrison.
"At that time..." Patrick stuttered with his words, a grown man unable to speak clearly. After a few moments of silence, he resignedly answered, "I must’ve been blind."
If it referred to the past Flossie Wright, Patrick certainly had to admit, he must’ve been blind. Only if he was blind, more than anything, would he have developed feelings for Flossie Wright and desperately launched his pursuit.
If he had a chance to go back to the past, he would want to return to his old foolish self and ruthlessly punch himself awake from the stupidity!
"You really went blind." As if he found a soulmate, Rowdy Brightwill agreed with a nod. He raised his hand to pat Patrick Morrison on the shoulder, "Look at her, cold, arrogant, willful, troublesome, impulsive, and always has you worried she’ll stir up trouble. Communication with her is such an effort... Can’t you see, there’s nothing good about her, only a blind man would be drawn to her!"
Patrick Morrison quietly observed Rowdy Brightwill without saying anything.
He had to admit, he found Rowdy Brightwill’s words quite pertinent.
So, the two of them inexplicably felt a sense of mutual misery, patting each other on the shoulder, but then both fell silent again.
Patrick Morrison didn’t know what to say about his dark past, while Rowdy Brightwill wasn’t sure if he should call Flossie Wright again.
On the other side.
After hanging up the phone and pondering for a moment, Flossie Wright dialed Becca Reyes’ number from memory.
It wasn’t training time nor bedtime, so presumably, Becca Reyes would answer the phone. Moreover, Becca would certainly have been the first to be aware of Janice Wood’s incident.
"Who is it?"
The call was quickly answered, followed by Becca Reyes’ somewhat tired voice.
Pausing slightly, Flossie simply said, "It’s me."
"Flossie?" Becca Reyes exclaimed in surprise before quickly regaining her composure, her tone becoming more formal, "I’ve been trying to reach you but your phone was off. Do you know about Janice’s situation?"
"Yes." Flossie responded, then asked, "How is she?"
"She’s been resuscitated but is still unconscious; she’s estimated to wake up tomorrow." Becca Reyes rubbed her forehead, trying to sound as vibrant as possible, "Don’t worry, I’ll be watching over her for the next few days. She’ll be alright."
Both sides of the call fell silent.
Becca Reyes was on her way back to the cooking class. It was nearly bedtime and apart from those on duty, there were few people around. The whooshing wind can be heard over the phone, along with Becca Reyes’ somewhat gloomy tone, clearly audible.
Flossie was still standing by the floor-to-ceiling window. Dian Deacon had muted the TV, allowing her to talk in silence. Olivia Hamilton, busy in the kitchen, heard the phone ring. Instinctively, she peered at the situation from the kitchen door, and after receiving a hint from Dian Deacon, moved softly back into the kitchen, only slowing down her vegetable chopping.
