Reprimanded by him, Merry didn’t dare to haphazardly voice her thoughts. She turned her head to look at Helen Wright, responding to her daughter’s anxious gaze by subtly shaking her head, signalling to drop the matter for now.
Regan Wright was in a foul mood. Provoking him further might not be beneficial. It’s probably better to wait until he’s calm again.
However, if they couldn’t find a way through Flossie Wright, they might lose several shops forever.
It seems Regan Wright was at odds with Flossie. That night, he increased the number of guards outside her room, and even outside her window. It was as though he was determined not to let her quietly slip away again. Meals were sent into her room by servants, and Flossie appeared to be quite calm, neither insisting on going out nor quarrelling with the bodyguards. However, with the door closed, no one could tell what she was up to inside the room.
Then next day, during dusk, while Flossie was still engrossed in her laptop, playing games, some people couldn’t resist knocking on her door.
Only after the knocks and calls reached nearly five minutes, surmising that the patience of the person outside was nearly exhausted, did she put down her laptop and leisurely proceed towards the door.
She barely opened the door, when Merry, who had been leaning against it to eavesdrop, lost her balance and almost stumbled inside. Instinctively, Flossie stepped aside, nimbly avoiding Merry’s weight, then leaned against the doorframe to see how Merry would present her friendly face.
"Flossie, have you just been taking a nap?"
While looking at Flossie, Merry quickly hid her awkwardness, and then summoned up an exceptionally gentle smile, as if she was looking at her own daughter, with an extremely affectionate gaze.
Flossie glanced outside the window at the night that had already fallen, raised her eyes lazily, and replied ambiguously, "Mhm, yeah."
However, as soon as she’d finished speaking, sounds of intermittent game music drifted from the room. She didn’t react, but Merry’s face stiffened, her deep smile was unable to hide her embarrassment.
"Can I come in and talk?"
After tentatively asking this, and catching sight of the stern-faced bodyguard outside the room, Merry’s embarrassment increased.
She came to find Flossie for a favor. Given their strained relationship, she didn’t have high hopes. If Flossie were to humiliate her, she would accept it.
But not in front of so many people...
As the mistress of the house, she couldn’t afford to lose face.
Flossie lazily gave Merry’s thin sweater a glance, then nodded nonchalantly.
As Flossie assented, Merry exhaled a quiet sigh of relief, stepping into the room with a heart full of joy. However, once inside, she was greeted by icy drafts. The chill brushed against her cheeks and fluttered her hair, instantly draining the warmth from her body, making her shudder. Instinctively, she wrapped her arms around herself. She scanned the dimly lit room and finally noticed that Flossie had opened the large windows.
Merry looked at Flossie in surprise, scrutinising the autumn coat she was wearing. She stared at Flossie as if she were a monster, completely failing to understand her strange behaviour.
It was already the cold of winter, with temperatures dropping to below minus ten degrees. Even the poorest households without heaters would at least dress warmly, but what was going on with Flossie? Despite having the heat on, she had the windows open. Even if she wanted some fresh air, the house certainly wasn’t lacking in clothes. Didn’t she know to put on a few more layers?
