Once the lotus root slices were placed, the chopsticks were withdrawn.
Looking up again, she regarded the man across from her, one permeated with an upright aura, his handsome features sharply defined, with eyebrows like drawn swords and starry eyes, and deep, ink-black pupils that seemed bottomless, all vaguely hinting at a smile.
"Thank you."
Withdrawing her gaze, Flossie lowered her eyes to the bowl in front of her.
Picking up vegetables, eating her meal.
However, the gaze on her did not shift in the slightest.
Glenn Hutchinson watched her, his expression tinged with a touch of laziness.
He was not hungry.
He had some matters to attend to in Capital City in the morning, and although he was supposed to head directly to Vernon, he had made a detour here, delaying for several hours just to catch a glimpse of her.
So busy that he had forgotten even to eat, but once seated at the dining table, he felt no hunger.
A strange feeling, as if just the sight of her was filling enough.
He knew he had taken a fancy to this woman, this stubborn and headstrong yet calm and rational woman.
Before the phone call last night, he had never felt such a strong desire to see her.
But after hanging up, he suddenly wanted to see her.
Even if she still wore a face of rejection, indifference, and nonchalance upon seeing him, displaying nothing but occasional admiration in her expression, he still wanted to have a look at her.
So, he came.
"When do you leave?"
Biting into a lotus root slice, Flossie spoke lazily, somewhat nonchalantly.
"Eight o’clock."
Watching her, his movements unchanged, Glenn Hutchinson replied softly.
Flossie was somewhat surprised.
Raising her wrist, the military watch there displayed the time.
Forty minutes left until eight o’clock.
Raising an eyebrow, Glenn Hutchinson chuckled lightly, "Do you hate to see me go?"
Ignoring his words, Flossie asked directly, "When did you get here?"
"Four o’clock."
His offhand reply caused Flossie to lift her gaze in astonishment.
Four in the afternoon, eight at night, a total of four hours.
What was he doing here?
And yet, he was dressed in civilian clothes.
He didn’t seem to be here on official business.
"So, why are you here, what’s the matter?"
Asking seemingly casually, Flossie picked another piece of cabbage for herself.
His eyes on her, Glenn Hutchinson gauged the distance—just a meter between the two of them.
Yet, when he had heard her voice on the phone last night, they were a thousand miles apart.
She was still as detached, withholding even the superfluous glances, treating him as one would an ordinary acquaintance; even the previous flicker of admiration was now nowhere to be found.
She said that she had some feelings for him but they were not deep, that they could break up at any moment.
Glenn seemed to feel this gap in their affections.
She was becoming more deliberate, seemingly eager to distance herself from him.
Now that there were feelings, how could he give up on her?
Curving the corners of his lips into a subtle smile, Glenn Hutchinson watched her, his voice rich and pleasant, "I said it before, I came to see you."
Suddenly, her movement with the chopsticks paused.
Flossie frowned, her eyes sweeping toward him with a hint of skepticism, but as she discerned the seriousness in his expression, that skepticism vanished without a trace.
She believed him.
What reason did she have not to believe him?
It’s just that...
Such a reason was astonishingly peculiar.
In fact, the former Flossie would often do similar things.
Reminded of a delicacy in some place, she would cross oceans to have it, savouring her fill at the stall before nonchalantly throwing down the money and heading back.
