So, Perry Reed, supporting Flossie Wright with one hand and holding an umbrella with the other, escorted her to the front of the small tent. He repeatedly urged her to get a good night’s sleep before leaving.
She entered the tent.
Feeling around, Flossie Wright found a flashlight, turned it on, and immediately saw a sleeping bag laid out inside.
The tent was very ordinary, the space was small, but many little things were scattered around inside.
There was an insulated water bottle with hot water still inside, a hot water bag in the sleeping bag that hadn’t cooled down yet, warming the whole sleeping bag. Next to the sleeping bag, there was a military-green army coat, a pack of army-exclusive chocolate, several packs of snacks, and some assorted food items.
It was all very simple, yet incredibly thoughtful.
Flossie Wright wanted to laugh, but for some reason, she couldn’t.
Crouching down, Flossie Wright reached for the army coat, but her fingers touched the pocket of her sweater and found something hard.
She was wearing a long sweater with two pockets on each side.
Her thoughts stirred, Flossie Wright suddenly remembered that when she had changed her clothes earlier, she had put all her things into the pockets.
What she had just touched...
It must have been the birthday gift from Perry Reed.
With this thought, Flossie Wright frowned and pulled the small box out of the pocket.
The wooden box was palm-sized, rectangular, and very finely made.
Using the flashlight, Flossie Wright opened the box.
When she saw what was inside, she was momentarily startled.
Brownish in color, triangle-shaped, with a hole drilled at the top holding a bead of the same color, attached to a black cord with two beads hanging from each end.
The stone was polished smooth, one side engraved with a Gossip pattern, and the other side faintly bearing the words "protection charm."
Why on earth would he give her a protection charm as a gift?
After a while, Flossie Wright chuckled to herself in amusement.
No wonder he hadn’t wanted her to open it in front of him. Giving such a superstitious item was tantamount to losing face for him.
After pondering for a moment, Flossie Wright put it back.
Four o’clock.
The sky was still dark, and the rain had just stopped.
After a busy night, Glenn Hutchinson followed the crowd back to the Assembly Area.
After a night of searching, they had found two survivors and several bodies too gruesome to look at.
When they returned, the exhaustion in their bodies and minds was such that when any of them closed their eyes, they would see the corpses of the victims. They could only pat each other on the shoulder, comforting one another to temporarily forget it all.
"Captain, look."
Willie Ash passed by the small tent, keenly noticing the faint light inside, and his spirit suddenly lifted. He called out to Glenn Hutchinson, who was behind him.
Glenn Hutchinson had seen it too.
It wasn’t the light of a flashlight; it wasn’t that bright, more like the light from a cell phone screen.
Pausing, Glenn Hutchinson said to Willie Ash, "Go rest."
Nodding, Willie Ash moved his nearly broken body, following the crowd towards the resting tents.
As the crowd started to thin out, Glenn Hutchinson watched the tent on that side for a while, and after a moment, he picked up his flashlight and walked toward the tent.
The tent’s zipper hadn’t been completely closed, leaving half of it open for ventilation. Glenn Hutchinson stood quietly outside, looking in, and could clearly see inside in just one glance.
Flossie Wright wasn’t sleeping.
At the moment, she was sitting in the corner, playing with her phone.
The phone screen’s light was dim, casting a soft glow on her delicate face. Strands of her hair hung loosely, concealing her smooth forehead, and her narrow eyes were slightly squinted, the light in them dancing as if she was browsing something.
Soon, she noticed the noise outside, her movements with the phone hesitated, and then she lifted her gaze and swept it outside.
