Nine o’clock.
Flossie Wright woke up.
The person beside her had disappeared at some unknown time, and the tent’s zipper was pulled tight, making the inside of the tent dim.
Vaguely, she could hear the noise from outside.
Footsteps, crying, discussions, lamentations.
She rubbed her messy hair, took off her military coat, and crawled out of the tent.
There stood quite a few people.
Some in military uniforms, some civilians, about a dozen people with grave expressions gathered together.
In the middle, there was a stretcher with the body of a girl, cut in half at the waist, limbs retrieved but too horrible to look upon.
The girl looked to be about five years old, but now, her eyes were tightly shut, never to open again.
Beside the stretcher was a mother in agonizing pain, her appearance one of utter heartbreak.
The others were discussing how to handle the situation.
Body bags had been prepared, and two soldiers stood by, watching the mother’s desperate resistance, each with a sorrowful expression.
They regretted not having taken care of it earlier before bringing her back.
"It’s truly tragic, only five years old."
"I heard that her mother had just come back during the earthquake, watched helplessly as the house collapsed, searched for two days, and was brought here after fainting this morning."
"Is she alone?"
"Tsk, a single mother, said to be from Qing Shan Street."
"It’s really pitiful, dead is bad enough, but to die without a whole body... Sigh."
A few locals gathered together, their speech tinged with a regional accent, but this dialect was all too familiar to Flossie Wright, and she understood it clearly.
Upon hearing the words "Qing Shan Street," Flossie paid close attention, then scrutinized the mother who was weeping uncontrollably.
She had glanced over her without paying much attention earlier, but upon a closer look, she noticed the woman was quite young.
She looked to be about twenty-four or twenty-five, her clothes covered in dust, many parts torn, looking shabby, her long curly hair tied behind her head in utter disarray.
After a quick glance that felt strangely familiar, Flossie paused, then took a few steps closer to the crowd to get a clear view of the mother.
Her face was dirty, full of splattered mud, and though she was quite attractive, her heart-wrenching cries were alarming to anyone who saw her.
This time, Flossie recognized her.
Only after pondering did she remember the woman’s name.
Qing Shan Street.
Codie Coleman.
Erina Taylor’s junior high school classmate.
In her teenage years, Erina wasn’t one to fight or cause trouble, but with her martial skills, naturally, there were enough fights to be had.
But Codie Coleman was different.
In her memories, Codie was the typical good girl, with good grades and a quiet demeanor that made her likeable. For a while, she even shared a desk with Erina and didn’t mind Erina’s "bad reputation."
However, their personalities were vastly different; some people just naturally have nothing to talk about, so no matter how amicably they got along, they couldn’t play together.
Codie’s family was poor, and after junior high, she was taken by her family to work, supposedly to earn money to help her younger brother go to school.
Three years later, she came back pregnant, and no matter how much her family pressured her, she refused to abort the child.
She didn’t know whether she had given birth in the end.
Six years ago, the Taylor family faced a catastrophe, and Erina left the city filled with hatred, never again setting foot on this land, ignorant of what happened on this street ever since.
Now, looking at the situation, she appeared to have given birth.
"You’re awake?"
