In a split second, the hand holding her back loosened, Aunt Li immediately took the opportunity to shove him away and ran toward them. It seemed like no time had passed at all before she darted behind Janice Wood.
Flossie Wright reacted almost instantly. Hearing the ruckus from Rowdy Brightwill, she was instantly on guard, managing to suppress her initial instinct to kick Aunt Li. She pulled Janice closely towards her, avoiding Aunt Li’s attack with astonishing speed. The next moment, Aunt Li, all bluster and noise, fell into the water with a splash.
Aunt Li was in an utter mess.
Aunt Li began to sob loudly.
The grip Flossie had on Janice’s arm tightened. Amid the hammering rain, she issued a whispered command. The clear words reached Janice’s ears, causing Janice, who had been like a puppet so far, to lift her gaze. A wave of silent sorrow washed over her face.
But she began to slowly move towards the shore.
Meanwhile, Aunt Li fell on her knees, started screaming towards Janice’s back, "If you leave without a word this time, Janice, I will never admit to raising you ever again!"
Janice abruptly stopped.
She raised her eyes, and all the courage in them crumbled away. Tears began to fall, mixing with the rain, and dripped into the sea.
She tilted her head slightly to look at Flossie. In Flossie’s dim eyes, something flickered. A wave of sadness hit her like a tidal wave, she threw herself onto Flossie, breaking into uncontrollable sobs.
"Flossie, he’s gone!"
She clung onto Flossie’s clothes, her words filled with a despair no less than Aunt Li’s. This was her breaking point after an extreme calm, an explosion no one could stop. She cried her heart out, engulfed by sadness and despair.
Yet, her words seemed to stun all the soldiers around them.
He’s, gone?
Who, is gone?
In the silence, they all seemed to understand something. However, without any confirmed information, they didn’t dare to believe anything.
Just as Janice finished speaking, Rowdy Brightwill’s entire body tensed. He glanced briefly at Aunt Li, who was kneeling in the water and seemed to have lost all control, before quickly approaching Flossie and Janice. He shared an expressive look with Flossie.
Janice came with Winsley Scott, the "he" Janice just mentioned...
Didn’t need words.
But, how could it be?
At least they refused to believe it.
An eerie silence spread, as no one dared to speak or ask. Everyone was too anxious to touch the raw truth, even opting to avoid it.
It seemed like the only sounds left in the world were the desperate cries.
"What are you crying for, do you even have the right to cry?!"
While no one was paying attention, Aunt Li suddenly crawled over to Janice. Apparently unaware of her surroundings, she spat out unforgivably cruel words and picked up a stone from somewhere, mercilessly swinging it at Janice’s leg.
Rowdy Brightwill immediately tried to block the stone upon seeing Aunt Li’s move. The stone accurately hit his arm, which already had scratches from being held. Now it was enduring another blow. His brows creased as he quickly snagged the stone away.
He bent slightly, trying to suppress the rage within him, and explained in the calmest tone he could to the enraged Aunt Li, "Our comrade, in order to save your son, is missing."
