"You’ve worked hard."
After giving the scene a cursory glance, Flossie Wright dragged the large tree to the entrance of the cave.
She had been too lazy to carry the pile of wood inside earlier and had planned to drag it in all at once. However, in just a short while, Perry Reed had taken care of it all.
As for the large tree she had dragged back last, naturally, it was placed outside to shield from the wind and rain.
They needed to stay another night.
Keeping the heat inside the cave while allowing some air circulation and blocking the exterior wind and rain, the fallen dead tree she had brought was most suitable for the task.
"Light two more fires."
Perry Reed continued to split wood and spoke to Flossie Wright in a calm voice.
Flossie stepped inside.
Looking around, she responded affirmatively and then began to make a fire.
The wood she had brought back was more than enough.
Having several campfires would mean more warmth inside, ensuring they wouldn’t get too cold while resting at night.
Thus, within the irregularly shaped cave, Flossie lit two more campfires, arranged in an equilateral triangle with the first one.
The area inside the triangle was ample for the two of them to sleep.
While lighting the fires, the inquisitive bird named God flew over, circling around Flossie a few times before finally settling on her shoulder, waiting patiently for her to get the fire started.
"We can eat now."
No more than five minutes after lighting the fires, Flossie heard Perry’s voice.
She glanced in Perry’s direction.
He was by the first campfire, seasoning two roasted fish with salt before casually tossing the salt packet aside.
"What about God’s share?"
As she stroked God’s feathers, Flossie asked indifferently.
"He’s already eaten," Perry said.
Flossie shrugged her shoulders, prompting God to fly off elsewhere.
After quickly adding some wood to the two fires, Flossie walked toward Perry.
Perry handed her one of the roasted fish.
Flossie took it.
Sitting cross-legged on the ground, she began to eat generously.
This time, without Flossie’s interference, the skin hadn’t gotten burnt. With the bitter taste gone, it actually tasted much better.
On par with Sandy’s cooking.
Flossie offered no comment.
She ate the fish leisurely and tossed all the bones into the fire when done.
"I’ll take the first watch tonight."
As she spoke, Flossie drew her military knife.
Perry’s gaze lingered on her for a moment, his mouth curving into a sly smile as he glanced at Flossie, who hadn’t brought up the subject of their afternoon conversation.
"Do you really intend to just avoid it?" Staring at Flossie, Perry slowly began to speak.
Since she had woken up, it was as if nothing had happened, and she avoided mentioning the matter.
In his experience with Erina Taylor, such behavior was virtually unheard of.
She was always quick to resolve a problem, never one to delay.
"I haven’t come up with a good excuse," Flossie said, looking up at him and speaking very directly.
Such an honest response left Perry speechless.
After a pause, Perry’s lips quirked up in a smile.
Make up an excuse?
She certainly had the nerve to say it!
"If the story you come up with doesn’t satisfy me," Perry drawled.
"Then I’ll come up with another," Flossie interrupted smoothly.
She tossed another piece of wood onto the fire and, looking at his brooding face, said directly, "You should get some sleep."
