The voice sounded familiar, but not overly so. Flossie Wright couldn’t immediately identify the person in question. Therefore, she placed the vegetable she was holding mid-air into Glenn Hutchinson’s bowl, put her chopsticks aside, then finally lifted her head to examine the stranger who’d appeared out of nowhere.
Having taken a closer look at his well-structured face, her memories of him gradually surfaced.
The man who had sat next to her at the alumni gathering, her ex-suitor - Patrick Morrison.
"What a coincidence."
Contrary to his previous demeanor, a surprising hint of a smile was now tugging at the corners of Patrick’s stern face.
Had he not smiled, Flossie would have dismissed this encounter as a casual, coincidental meeting that forced him out of his comfort zone to just say hello. But his smile was as if he was breaking away from their past rigid relationship, implying that he had forgiven Flossie. This indeed raised some eyebrows.
"Coincidence?"
Flossie squinted, appraising Patrick Morrison from head to toe. His military aura was still there; he had an upright posture and a hard demeanor. His edge was evident and unmissable, leaving no room for doubt about his identity.
But his intentions...
It wasn’t that Flossie was naturally suspicious, but in this world, there are rarely any true coincidences. Anything somewhat odd or out of the ordinary deserved her attention.
"You don’t trust me?" Reading her cautionary stance, Patrick asked frankly. His calm demeanor didn’t betray a single flaw.
Glenn, who had been calmly eating all the while, placed his chopsticks down and glanced at Patrick. Once he recognized who it was, his gaze flickered but he remained seated with no apparent reaction.
"I don’t."
Looking up, Flossie replied frankly.
Regardless of whether she believed him or not, she didn’t wish to engage with him - a man she had once fallen out with.
"You..." Patrick paused, a vexed expression on his face. His eyes then wandered over to Glenn as if trying to make sense of who this stranger was. Yet the moment his gaze met Glenn’s cold eyes, his body stiffened in surprise, "Captain Hutchinson, what are you doing here?"
Retaining his coolness, Glenn glanced at Patrick, then looked away casually. "As you can see, on a date," he replied with a hint of warning in his voice.
Patrick froze, his brows furrowed in thought.
Patrick had interacted with Glenn before, but that was just during a military exercise. Despite how big the exercise was, Glenn led his Blue Team to an overwhelming victory with minimum loss. This strategy left Patrick’s team in ruins.
Being captured by Glenn during the drill led to Patrick’s admiration of Glenn’s performance on the field. This led to him showing more respect towards Glenn each time they crossed paths afterward.
But seeing him away from the Forces was shocking enough. Now, him dating Flossie...
Thinking back to the Flossie he remembered, Patrick couldn’t help but find the situation baffling.
After all, he clearly remembered being infatuated with Flossie once. He began to wonder if Glenn, like himself, had also been "blinded" for a moment. Moreover, what about Rowdy Brightwill who broke off the engagement, yet still maintains a close relationship with Flossie?
"You two..." Patrick elongated his words while lowering his voice to a probing whisper, "are together?"
"What does this have to do with you?""
Flossie interrupted him, the coldness in her voice was like an impenetrable barrier.
"It matters!" Patrick felt a wave of pressure and stood up straight, yelling in a loud and firm tone, "Flossie Wright, I intend to pursue you again!"
She glanced at the glass of water in her hand, thought for a moment, and ultimately didn’t drink it.
Flossie seemed unmoved, as if the one being confessed to wasn’t her.
Meanwhile, his loud voice, reminiscent of when he used to address his higher-ups in the Forces, attracted much attention from the other diners. As the diners turned to see what was happening at their table, their minds raced with various love triangle cliches.
This scenario gave the impression of a remorseful man wanting to win his ex back but discovering she’s found her true love.
The two people enjoying their hotpot were in harmony with each other, both of them eye-catching. Any observer could see how well-matched they were, a stark contrast to the mediocre man attempting to intrude.
In just a brief moment, the diners were inclined to support the handsome and confident Glenn. They unequivocally viewed Patrick as the heartbreaker. Some even went on to insult and persuade Patrick to stop humiliating himself.
However, what troubled Patrick was the pressure emanating from the side, in particular, the two pairs of eyes shooting warning signals at him. This forced him into a defensive mode.
He traced the source of such formidable pressure - it was looking in Glenn’s direction.
"Captain Hutchinson..."
Facing this potent presence, even a tough guy like Patrick felt a bit insecure. He frowned slightly, intending to express his feelings to Glenn. However, as soon as he turned his gaze in Glenn’s direction, that intimidating stare vanished without a trace.
It almost felt as if nothing had happened at all.
Glenn wasn’t paying him any attention, his expression subdued, as if he didn’t care about what was happening.
"Whether you pursue her or not has no bearing on me.""
Glenn brushed off Patrick’s concern and resumed his dinner. As if remembering something, Flossie checks the time on her phone and then gives Glenn a nudge, "It’s time."
Glenn sent out a mass text message from Flossie’s phone earlier. And now, the time marked on the phone had almost arrived.
