Nearing noon, the drizzling rain showed no signs of stopping.
The terrain here was treacherous indeed, with a surging rapid flowing below and rocks protruding on both banks. The dense, humid jungle followed next, filled with intertwined branches and bushes everywhere. There was no paved road in sight; going forth seemed extremely strenuous - it required blazing one’s own trail, literally.
Understandably, apart from lost tourists and training Forces, normal people would never set foot in such an area.
Calvin Ramos, who had been "commanded" by Flossie Wright to start a fire, cut down two chunks of wood with his military knife - one round and one wide, planning to create a fire through an ancient method, "drilling wood to produce fire". This exercise was meant to evade infrared detection. No one thought about lighting a fire, let alone bringing auxiliary tools like a fire-starter. Thus, they could only resort to the most basic method of wilderness survival.
However, it was practical indeed.
During downtime, Flossie Wright sat on a stone by the bank, took off her soggy coat to wring it dry, and continued to wear it. She propped her chin up with one hand, and watched Calvin Ramos create fire under a tree with a bored expression, her eyes surveying him curiously.
When it came to Calvin Ramos, she didn’t have prejudice. It just always felt to her that this man was shrouded in a layer of incompatible aura. He indeed appeared modest and gentle, courteous to everyone, not like the typical sloggers in the Forces. But he wasn’t like Austin Shepherd, a straightforward man one could see through at a glance. Behind his reticence, Calvin Ramos could always see through things keenly.
Of course, Flossie Wright didn’t feel offended by his reticence, but it was only natural for her to remain reserved towards him.
"I’m going to find something to eat."
Hopping off the stone, Flossie Wright pulled out the military knife sheathed at her waist and headed straight into the nearby dense jungle.
In just a moment, her slender figure disappeared into the thick woods.
Meanwhile, Calvin Ramos glanced at Flossie Wright leaving from the corner of his eye, but he didn’t cease the work in his hands. He continued to methodically rub the slender stick in his hand.
Creating fire from wood drilling was achieved by long periods of friction until enough sawdust was generated to ignite. If he paused halfway, all of his prior efforts would be in vain. Naturally, he couldn’t afford to slack off.
The reason Flossie Wright tasked him with starting a fire was because she didn’t have the patience to do it.
Inside the misty jungle, the dampness was heavier than expected and carried a hot, stuffy breath. Their clothes were supposed to be waterproof, but after being soaked for so long, they were thoroughly wet. And under these conditions, they certainly wouldn’t dry anytime soon. All Flossie Wright could do was to hasten her movements, increasing her blood flow to prevent her body from getting too cold and tired.
Luckily, she found a hare scampering around in the jungle within ten minutes. Known for her swift demeanor, no sooner had she spotted the foraging hare, she was already ready to strike. A flash of her military knife in the underbrush, and the hare was instantly slathered in fresh blood, falling to the ground without a sound.
"Who’s there?"
Before she could retrieve the hare, Flossie Wright heard a rough shout. She raised an eyebrow and swiftly moved to the nearby bushes.
In this thick jungle, there were plenty of good hiding spots everywhere. Moreover, as she was alone, hiding was even easier for her. However, the moment a few figures appeared in her field of vision, she had already raised her sniper rifle. Kneeling down and aiming, she targeted the four Blue Forces soldiers who, unbeknownst to them, had walked right into her line of fire.
