In the afternoon, the heavy rain showed no sign of stopping. Dark clouds, accompanied by brilliant lightning and the growl of thunder, approached, blocking the skies above from view. The base was like a world plunged into night; wherever one looked was shrouded in a darkness that was almost indistinguishable from night.
As the lightning struck and thunder roared, Flossie Wright, carrying a basket of crayfish, followed the path directed by the platoon leader towards Glenn Hutchinson’s office. As she walked down the corridor, all she could see was the silent and dimly lit field in the distance. At this moment, most of the soldiers on the base were undergoing training, and the buildings were mainly occupied by those engaged in logistic work. The once bustling base under the backdrop of a thunderstorm, was now unbearably desolate.
Flossie took her time, the buildings nearby were all connected and she didn’t even need an umbrella. She took several turns and finally arrived at the office entrance, only to slow her pace upon seeing the light from the doorway.
The office was brightly lit, the door half-open. Light spilled out from the doorway, blending with the lights in the corridor, casting indistinct shadows. From inside, a calm, slightly deep voice could be heard, seemingly talking on the phone. It was oddly soothing in the cold afternoon.
"Knock, knock."
Without any hesitation, Flossie knocked on the door twice, leaned against the doorway, and casually scanned the room.
Glenn Hutchinson stood near the window, unsurprisingly talking on the phone. His tall figure cast a long shadow under the lights, his side profile exuding perfection, resembling a magnificent statue. His austere beauty, coupled with his military uniform, made Flossie’s gaze linger before finally shifting away after a while.
"Well, look who it is, the ’Gun Queen’!"
When Glenn Hutchinson noticed her and turned to look, a deep, powerful yet slightly mocking voice echoed from within the room.
Clearly it wasn’t Glenn’s.
Flossie’s eyes sparkled as she recognized the Frogman Captain. His presence was commanding, his gaze radiating authority and scrutiny, but it held a touch of indecipherability. At that moment, he was sitting upright in a chair, with a deck of cards, two bottles of liquor, a bag of sunflower seeds, and a bag of peanuts on the table before him. It appeared that he was killing time.
Meanwhile, Glenn Hutchinson finally hung up the phone and casually threw it onto the nearby bookshelf. His eyes skimmed over Flossie but without any hint of surprise, he said directly, "Come in."
After saying so, he sat down across the Frogman Captain.
With two men in the room, Flossie didn’t feel awkward and walked in confidently, placing the food she had brought onto the table.
She didn’t seem in a hurry to leave. After glancing at the stern-faced Frogman Captain a few times, she introduced the crayfish to Glenn. "The crayfish, sent by Sergeant Lin."
"Quite the treatment." The Frogman Captain chimed in with a sarcastic comment. He leaned back in his chair, his icy, imposing gaze fixed on Glenn’s face.
Glenn Hutchinson met the challenge in his eyes, his expression shifting from casual to stern. For Flossie, he pointed to the seat next to him and said, with a voice full of charm, "Come, have a good chat with Captain Bard."
Captain Bard.
Glenn Hutchinson had made a perfect introduction for him.
"Clever boy, so the training plan was just an excuse!" Captain Bard glared at Glenn, clearly displeased.
As soon as he saw Flossie enter, Captain Bard realized that something was up. Given the timing of Glenn’s call to him, the intention of Glenn was crystal clear to him.
