Becca Reyes did not probe further for gossip, nor did she stay longer in the area. She discreetly left for her dormitory after speaking her piece.
Watching Rowdy Brightwill’s approaching silhouette, Flossie Wright remained still, her expression indifferent as she looked at him.
"Do you need something?"
Without waiting for Rowdy Brightwill to respond, Flossie spoke first, getting straight to the point.
"Today is the weekend." Rowdy Brightwill’s reply was cryptic, leaving one perplexed.
Using an uncertain gaze, Flossie nodded in agreement, "I’m aware."
If it were any other forces, Saturday would be for rest. Even Rowdy Brightwill and his crew had some downtime. However, new recruits didn’t have a so-called day off. Their whole day, every day, was filled with training.
The atmosphere between the two had become particularly awkward.
Rowdy Brightwill dropped his gaze, seemingly puzzled as he looked at her, unexpectedly asking, "When was the last time you called home?"
Ringing home...
Frown forming on her brow, Flossie suddenly remembered the phone she had seen the night before she left the new recruits’ squad. Recruits weren’t allowed to have phones, but they had acquired them upon leaving. The last time she used her phone, it was to exchange numbers with Janice Wood, and that was just to change the battery. Since then, it’d been left unused in her bag.
So, she hadn’t made a call yet.
Just looking at Flossie’s silent expression, Rowdy Brightwill could guess most of it. He silently sighed in his heart, pulling out his phone before handing it to her, "Your mother’s been trying to reach you. She got worried and rang me. She thought something had happened to you in the army. Call her back when you’re free."
Her mother?
Rubbing her nose, Flossie couldn’t help but feel a little awkward.
Even though she had accepted this body, this identity, she still hasn’t accepted her involvement in events from this body’s past. Being in the forces might restrict her freedom, but to the old Flossie, it was a brand-new life. It was easy for the new her to settle into this life, but when it came to family or friends from the old Flossie...
Although she had memories, they were not her own. Having memories without emotional attachment made her feel detached from them; hence, she had never thought about calling "family."
Weighing the phone in her hand, Flossie tossed it back to Rowdy Brightwill in no time, "Just assure them I’m fine."
"Wait, your parents... they’re pretty worried about you," Rowdy Brightwill stepped in front of her as she tried to leave. His expression was a hint odd.
Her parents...
The jumbled memories were engulfing her, causing Flossie’s face to slightly change. However, she managed to suppress her momentary discomfort successfully, maintaining her normal demeanor as if nothing happened. At least, Rowdy Brightwill didn’t detect anything amiss.
"You dial."
Flossie shrugged, a trace of helplessness crossing her face.
With Flossie’s approval, Rowdy Brightwill didn’t hesitate to dial her mother’s phone number swiftly. Once the call was connected, he immediately handed the phone to Flossie, afraid she’d reconsider if given the chance.
"Hello, is this Little Xu?"
The voice was gentle on the other side of the line, not a feigned kindness but a genuine one that older folks usually have. Her voice was quite soothing to the ears and brought comfort to the heart.
Upon hearing the voice, Flossie was momentarily stunned, subconsciously pulling out stored information about her mother from her mind.
She previously didn’t care much about Flossie Wright’s background, only knowing the basics. She didn’t remember many details, so many minor things were forgotten. However, certain things were etched onto her mind that she could not forget.
