A sky-blue apron with white clouds was a refreshing colour, and clearly not Glenn Hutchinson’s.
When Glenn approached Flossie again, he didn’t hand her the apron directly. Instead, he slipped it over her head carefully making sure it fit right. Then he moved behind her to help her secure it.
Flossie turned her head to gaze at him standing behind her. The white kitchen light cast a clear shadow on his features, his downturned eyes mysterious in the shadow. He was tying a simple knot in the apron, but there was a serious look in his eyes as he did so.
Having deftly tied the apron, Glenn carefully lifted the hair that had been pressed against the back of her neck, his magnetic voice was carried in from behind her. Alongside the steady trickle of water, his words seemed intent on reaching deep into her heart.
As always, Flossie casually responded, the words never sounding like they came from the heart.
It didn’t bother Glenn. He took out all the washed vegetables and meat and arranged them next to the cutting board. Each step was clear and organized.
Flossie watched his hands, long fingers gracefully managing tasks under the light, their movement fluid and fascinating.
It was undeniable that with these hands he had accomplished so much. He had killed decisively, fired guns, saved her in the most straightforward manner, offered assistance, and now, he was using the same hands to prepare what promised to be a delicious dinner.
She squinted slightly, watching until Glenn busied himself again, before intuitively withdrawing her gaze and, picking up the kitchen knife to start preparing the ingredients that didn’t look easy to handle.
While they were occupied in the kitchen, little Hutchinson, having spent some time with a puzzle, strolled around the living room before zeroing in on Glenn’s phone hanging on the wall. His eyes sparkled with mischief before cautiously approaching, stealing the phone, and he quietly and swiftly sneaked outside the kitchen to snap a photo of two people inside.
Gazing at the photo with satisfaction, little Hutchinson was just about to sneak away when he happened to meet Glenn’s gaze. Almost reflexively, he stood straight, his expression serious like that of a little soldier, pretending as if nothing had happened.
Glenn saw the phone in his hand. The screen’s glow still revealed the captured picture. With a small smile playing on his lips, Glenn raised an eyebrow at him in a manner that meant he was free to leave.
The small boy breathed a sigh of relief internally, grinned at Glenn, then turned and marched away with standard military precision.
Despite his small frame, his actions were clear and decisive.
Flossie turned her head towards the sound of relatively loud footsteps but only caught a glimpse of little Hutchinson’s retreating figure. She frowned, puzzled, but didn’t dwell on it too much. Her attention quickly returned to the ingredients in her hand.
Living in a military family, it was no surprise to see military influences rubbing off on him.
The food that Glenn prepared always smelled wonderful. Every time something was served, little Hutchinson would rush over to sneak a few glances. Flossie, having no qualms about her manners, would brazenly walk up with her chopsticks to sample a few bites whenever Glenn served a new dish, and gave it a "not bad" evaluation under Glenn’s helpless gaze.

After all, Glenn’s dishes, though homely and not as luxurious as those in hotels, had full flavours, colours, and aroma. It might fall slightly short of a professional chef like Lin, but compared to Flossie, he was streets ahead.
In the process of tasting new dishes, Flossie, who was always quick in her tasks, finished cutting the ingredients unconsciously. Glenn still had two dishes left to cook. Having nothing else to do, she began bringing the prepared meals to the table.
However, the moment she put the first two dishes on the table, the doorbell rang, the sound was conspicuously out of place—
