Almost in that instant, frantic footsteps and the clanging of pots and pans reverberated in the kitchen, making it as chaotic as it was during the day.
With a "click," Flossie Wright switched on her flashlight, the bright beam immediately illuminating the entire kitchen. In the harsh light, several sneaky silhouettes were distinctly visible, and a few familiar faces full of surprise and guilt appeared before her.
Oh, and two old acquaintances.
With all the regular team members out, all that remained were these inexperienced rookies who didn’t understand the rules.
In fact, if they hadn’t eaten, all they had to do was talk to Mr. Lin. Nobody would starve them. Yet, these people were so unruly, performing their clandestine activities as slyly as possible.
Looking at those buns they held, stolen right under their nose, Flossie’s eyes flickered slightly.
Damn it, they stole her late-night snack too!
"Sneaking around?"
Flossie leaned casually against the door, asking them leisurely.
There were two doors in the kitchen, one of which was the back door Flossie was now blocking. The other led to the dining hall, but that door was locked and even if they pried it open, the main door of the dining hall was also locked. Unless someone among them could pick a lock in seconds, there was no way they could escape from Flossie’s field of vision in such a short time.
Of course, it only took Flossie a few seconds to size up these five would-be thieves.
"Flossie Wright!"
Suddenly, one nervous-looking female soldier among the five stood tall, stepping forward and calling out Flossie’s name a notch higher in volume.
Flossie casually swept her gaze over this bold woman, looking at her a few more times. As soon as she recognised her features, she broke into a sudden laugh.
She remembered her name... Agnes Parker, right?
Flossie didn’t like minding other people’s business, but due to her professional habits, she always unconsciously remembered others’ identities. Surprisingly, this bold woman was one of the soldiers who had once bullied Janice Wood, worked against her and Becca Reyes, and even got kicked by Becca’s little stunt. In other words, she was one among those who always bullied her, Becca and Janice. Her "partner in crime," Clara Birch, who also indulged in such underhanded activities, was standing right next to her.
"What’s up?"
Raising an eyebrow, Flossie asked casually.
Though she had not directly accused them, or summoned anyone else to capture the "thieves," these five people, caught red-handed, were visibly trembling.
They were caught with their hands in the cookie jar, by someone they disliked no less.
For them, sneaking into the kitchen to steal food was inherently risky. They had thought their chances of getting away with it were better at two in the morning. Little did they suspect they would run into their nemesis, Flossie Wright.
Getting caught the first time they tried something like this was unsettling, to say the least, and their resentment towards Flossie was palpable.
"What can I do to make sure you don’t talk?!"
Clara Birch snorted coldly, taking a step forward to protect Agnes, signaling that she should not be too impulsive. Then she threw a question at Flossie, hoping to resolve the situation.
Had it been any other cook, Clara was confident that they would let them off if they pleaded a little and acted pitiful.
But she didn’t believe that would work with Flossie.
She remembered how she and Agnes had bullied Janice, how Flossie had treated them during the downpour, and most of all, how they had targeted Flossie and Becca during training.
