The dawn was breaking.
On the military vehicle carrying the female soldiers, no one had dared to utter a word since they climbed aboard.
The uncertainty and confusion about the upcoming operation, fear and anxiety towards the new Instructor, left them all overwhelmed and in turmoil.
In contrast, in the vehicle up ahead filled with male soldiers, there were loud chatter and occasional bouts of hearty singing. However, amongst the female soldiers, there was only silence. An endless silence.
It was unnerving.
Nancy Phillips, seated in the middle, was scrutinizing them intensely. Every look resulted in heads being lowered a little more. The effect was apparent.
This mission was of paramount importance. Failure was not an option.
What they needed was not communication nor tranquility and relaxation.
But tension.
Constant, nerve-wracking tension that wound every nerve tight.
After about two hours, the two vehicles finally drew to a halt.
Dawn had almost broken.
"Disembark!"
Along with an order from Nancy Phillips, the back door of the vehicle was then opened, and everyone filed out in an orderly manner.
Outside was an open area of land.
In the outskirts, there stood a lone abandoned factory, and beyond that were mountain ranges and desolation.
Without a doubt, most of the new recruits had puzzled looks on their faces.
They were wearing civilian clothes, looking like ordinary individuals, and yet they had been brought to such a place where no one cared what they wore?
Puzzle aside.
The male and female soldiers lined up two meters apart from each other, forming two columns.
Following a simple lineup, much to everyone’s confusion, Nathan Foster in a conspicuously lavish fashion, began distributing wads of cash to each new recruit.
One banknote for each person.
The new recruits who got the Red Banknotes were now even more baffled.
Um, what’s this... for?
After the distribution, Nathan Foster stood between the two columns and shouted, "Has everyone got their money?!"
"Yes, we have!"
Everyone was puzzled but their replies were clear.
The loudness of their voices was deafening.
Satisfied with their responses, Nathan Foster stepped back a few paces.
Nancy Phillips didn’t intervene but leaned against the door of the military vehicle, quietly watching all this unfold.
At the same time, Austin Shepherd stepped forward a few paces.
"To avoid any unnecessary talk, we’ll get straight to the point," Austin Shepherd glanced at them, "For the upcoming week, you will only have a hundred dollars, a smartphone, your physical body, and your brain. If you don’t want to be eliminated, better use what you have wisely."
After a pause, Austin Shepherd continued, "You will need to do two things during this week.
First, we are on the outskirts of the city. Find your way to the city center by your own means.
Second, there is a drug trafficking gang operating in the city. Use your own methods to gather intelligence and obtain any useful information you can."
To add to that, you’re required to act individually. If you get injured or die during this operation, the Forces won’t compensate you in any way. So pay attention and take care of yourselves!"
End of instructions.
The entire field was silent.
Yet, the expressions on the faces of the new soldiers were quite the spectacle.
Bewilderment, shock, discomfort, hesitation... all sorts of reactions were visible.
They looked as if they had seen a ghost.
Drug trafficking gang...
Damn it, is this real, or is it a joke?
Austin Shepherd watched their reactions with a stern expression and loudly asked, "Did everyone understand?"
"Understood..."
