Just as she sat down, Becca Reyes nudged Flossie Wright with her elbow, her eyebrows twitching slightly as she pointed towards a figure not far away.
Flossie squinted her eyes before looking up to see Neal Thompson sitting there.
She let out a light sound, her voice clearly laced with confusion.
She knew that Neal Thompson was part of this operation.
Besides them, members for the cooking class were openly selected. Physical fitness and cooking skills were considered. When the members were selected, it was basically announced on the spot. They had heard the news that very day.
Leaning in slightly, Becca Reyes deliberately lowered her voice, almost mouthing the word: "Speed."
Flossie’s eyebrows moved slightly. Even though Becca’s signals were vague, Flossie understood perfectly well.
Becca was commenting on Neal Thompson’s performance. As part of the cooking class themselves, Becca Reyes and Flossie Wright were already accustomed to regular training, so they never panicked. On the contrary, the other cooks were usually quite flustered. Despite the chaos, Neal Thompson managed to keep everything well-organized and maintain their pace.
For a female cook, this was indeed strange.
After all, comparing her with Yvonne Watson, the difference was clear.
However, Flossie did not find it strange.
Neal Thompson and Yvonne were indeed different. Yvonne spent her days concerned with how to maintain her beauty, while Neal rarely cared about her own appearance. After using the face masks that Yvonne generously offered her a few times, she found them troublesome and returned them to Yvonne.
Also, cooks have the opportunity to handle guns too. Flossie had seen Neal practicing on her own several times when she had nothing to do.
Flossie glanced away then replied to Becca Reyes, without saying much.
"I don’t know when we’ll get there," Becca Reyes held onto her arms, shivering from the cold. She then leaned closer to Flossie, almost pressing her head on Flossie’s shoulder, and said, "I’m going to take a nap. Wake me up when we arrive."
It was freezing cold, opportunities to have hot showers were rare, and nobody would be insane enough to take a cold shower so early in the morning. Becca wasn’t sure about Flossie’s situation, but she knew that she herself had yet to warm up. She felt as cold as a popsicle.
However, things rarely go as planned.
Soon, someone started singing loudly in the carriage. The booming voice almost jolted Becca awake. When she finally opened her eyes and saw the enthusiastic and zealous soldiers singing, her face instantly turned gloomy.
How could she have forgotten? The soldiers in the forces loved to sing military songs whether they were busy or not. The only people who could sleep through this deafening noise were either incredibly focused or deaf.
Turning her head, Becca saw Flossie, who was sitting upright with her eyes closed, nurturing her spirit.
Becca poked Flossie’s arm in puzzlement.
There was no response.
After mulling it over, Becca decided to poke Flossie’s painted face.
But before she could, a hand reached out, grabbing her mischievous hand.
Flossie, who was maintaining her calm, opened her eyes slightly and tossed over two small black objects.
Becca instinctively caught them. Looking closely, she realized they were earplugs.
Becca lowered her head in silence, glancing at their fellow soldiers who were singing excitedly. She let out a deep sigh, then proceeded to insert the earplugs into her ears.
With the help of these "artifacts," Flossie and Becca safely reached their destination.
Maxwell Moore drove for two hours. The scenery changed from a vast sea to dense jungles, the smell of seawater replaced by the fresh scent of the jungle. Each new recruit got off the vehicle with a radiant spirit, their faces full of joy and anticipation. They were eager to get started on their tasks, not wasting any time.
Flossie and Becca naturally joined the rest of their cooking class, starting to set up tents for cover at the location assigned to them. The cooks were mainly responsible for logistics work, primarily ensuring the soldiers were fed, so they didn’t have to prepare for combat. As for Flossie and Becca, who were informed in advance about following the cooking class, they had to diligently do these tasks.
"Do you think our military exercise will end without us even firing a single shot?"
While setting up the tents, Becca chatted sporadically with Flossie, an undertone of disappointment in her voice.
"No." Flossie continued her work, "But it’s likely we’ll be bombed by the blue army before we even get to fire."
This was an annual exercise involving multiple branches of the military from the air, sea, and land. According to Rowdy Brightwill, it was one of the largest scale exercises in recent years. Things wouldn’t end unless it reached a groundbreaking climax.
They were part of the peripheral combat personnel, so the chance to join the battle was always there. The question was whether they would wake up to find themselves "killed" before firing a shot.
Having no choice as they were under heavy weapon suppression, they had no scope for resistance.
Just as Becca finished setting up the tent and was about to say something, a furious face unexpectedly appeared in front of her, effectively silencing her.
