Lost in thought, a gentle and pleasant-sounding voice reached her.
At the sound, she turned her head and immediately saw the female military doctor from last night.
Still wearing the same white coat, pure as snow, crisp and clean, her pale, smooth skin stood out in this filthy and noisy environment, appearing completely out of place.
She looked at Flossie Wright with a soft and kind expression on her face.
Nodding her head, Flossie responded noncommittally.
The next moment, there was a sharp intake of breath from beside her.
Ann Cavanaugh had just passed by when she caught sight of Flossie standing amidst the crowd; she had come over to greet her, not expecting to be faced with such a horrific scene amid the throng of people.
Somewhat concerned, Flossie glanced to the side and saw Ann’s expression of stunned bewilderment.
Surprise, shock, pity, grief.
All these emotions lingered in her eyes, yet fear was notably absent.
Pausing, Flossie raised her eyebrows and asked, "You’re not afraid?"
Startled, Ann’s attention shifted back.
Sadness filled her brows, but as she looked at Flossie, her emotions gradually faded away, and she shook her head in confusion with her eyes clear as pools of water.
"It’s okay."
After a moment’s thought, she replied in a particularly calm manner.
Such a reaction inevitably surprised Flossie.
It wasn’t that she looked down on others, but most girls would feel fear at the sight of such a gruesome scene.
Having observed this military doctor’s demeanor the night before, Flossie had already categorized her as one of the "majority."
Smiling faintly, Flossie withdrew her gaze, then once again focused on the perimeter, observing the situation.
After a long while...
Ever since Flossie had posed the question, Ann had fallen into deep thought, eventually understanding what Flossie was asking.
Thinking it over, Ann moved a step closer to Flossie and whispered, "I think, I know what you’re asking. Um, you know, I’m a military doctor; I’ve seen a lot of... well, situations like this."
Towards the end, Ann seemed somewhat embarrassed.
The abrupt explanation made it unclear if the other person would accept it.
She couldn’t quite explain why she felt the need to clarify things with Flossie, but suddenly felt that if she didn’t share the whole story, she would be somewhat unsettled.
Nodding, Flossie seemed somewhat distracted.
Upon further reflection, it was quite easy to understand.
As a doctor, she probably saw plenty of cadavers for dissection in medical school, not to mention all sorts of severed limbs and fragments; to say nothing of a military doctor’s experiences.
Such people would feel sadness, compassion, and sympathy, but they would not feel fear.
"Don’t—"
"Aaaaah, let go of my daughter!"
In the crowd, Codie Coleman seemed to be going mad, furiously fighting off the soldiers coming toward her, blocking everyone from getting close to her daughter’s body.
She was screaming.
Flossie looked at her, and her eyes darkened slightly.
She remembered Codie as a calm and gentle girl, but now she was frantically protecting her daughter’s corpse.
Restraining her emotions, Flossie looked at the soldiers, somewhat at a loss, standing aside, unable to bear the sight any longer, and averted her eyes.
Sighing, Flossie parted the crowd and made her way towards Codie.
Her movements were so light, she avoided catching anyone’s attention, so much so that when she reached Codie’s side, people only realized that a woman had suddenly appeared from nowhere.
Approaching from behind Codie, Flossie bent down and grasped her wrist.
