With furrowed brows, Perry Reed hesitated, ultimately letting go of her.
Meanwhile—
"Knock. Knock. Knock."
The car window is being rapped on.
There stands a traffic officer in uniform, back straight and doing his job impeccably.
By any right, he should be turning them in for almost causing an accident by running a red light and now parking here, if he didn’t, it would equate to misconduct.
Perhaps it’s her military personality, Flossie shies from having the police catch her breaking the law. At the sound, she turns her head away, too listless to look.
Perry Reed, already disturbed, becomes even more impatient at the sight of the traffic police’s arrival.
"Sit tight!"
He abruptly barks, eyebrow arched, looking straight ahead.
He steps on the accelerator!
The car takes off!
At that moment, the traffic police officer seems to realize something is wrong and makes a move to get in front but Perry Reed’s action takes him by surprise. The officer takes one step toward the car and it surges forward, leaving him in the dust in a blink of an eye.
Soon enough, the car sped dozens of meters.
In the car, watching the scenery whizzing by the roadside, Flossie raises an eyebrow.
Now they’ve not only run a red light but also exceeded the speed limit!
The car wasn’t registered under their names— it was borrowed from someone; regardless of the bother they might cause, it wouldn’t fall back on them.
It was neither a weekend nor peak hour traffic, the roads were smooth and easy to drive on. Perry Reed adeptly sped up making a journey that should take an hour to just half an hour. They soon arrived on the highway.
The speed increased even more.
Flossie withdrew to her own thoughts, not wanting to bother him.
Evening fell.
At half-past seven,
They finally arrived at Vernon City.
Awakening from a long sleep, Flossie found her high fever hadn’t subsided but had gotten worse.
She rolls down the window to let in the night’s breeze, refreshing her skin on her cheeks, ears, and strands of hair, a small comfort in the midst of it all.
"Where are we?"
Leaning against the window, gazing at the swift night scenery, Flossie arches her eyebrow and asks Perry Reed, who is driving.
"You don’t remember?"
Perry Reed slantingly gazes at her, counters her question.
Lowering her head slightly, chin resting on the back of her hand, Flossie lazily replies, "There’s so much change, I wouldn’t remember."
The nation was in a time of economic development, always tearing down and rebuilding, always advancing modernization. Even for this remote city, not much-known, yet it was silently changing.
Five years.
On this piece of land, many things had disappeared, and many were emerging.

There was no sadness, no nostalgia, no reminiscing, even more, it was a matter of relief.
For a city to remain unchanged, that would be the real disaster.
The recent earthquake, though it was a disaster for many, it also symbolized a fresh start for this city.
Not long after—
They start to encounter the aftermath of the earthquake.
Streetlights no longer shone, the ground had fractures, buildings were tilted, trees had tumbled....
The night was dark, only the car’s headlights illuminated the road ahead, giving a vague sense of surroundings.
This was an area affected by aftershocks of the earthquake, though devastating, the damage wasn’t severe.
Flossie leaned against the car window, facing the cold wind, observing the situation around them, she held a flashlight to occasionally light up their surroundings.
"Do you remember the earthquake from three years ago?"
Looking outside the car, Flossie suddenly asks. Her words, carried by the wind, float into the car.
