Flossie Wright was not the kind of person who readily obeyed orders. The only reason she stayed so calmly in her room for so long was because she had noticed something unusual.
Last night she went to sleep the moment she returned to her room, not giving it much thought. However, when she woke up this morning, she constantly felt like she was being watched. This was not like the feeling she got from being watched by her bodyguards, who merely watched over her with caution. This was malicious, an invisible threat.
Having been accustomed to living on the edge, she had relied on her intuition to survive many dangerous situations. This time was no different, she was instinctively alert. Unexpectedly, the other party truly hid in the shadows for a day, simply to monitor her situation in the room.
Theoretically, although the former Flossie was quite temperamental, her adversaries were mainly her peers, who at most sought vengeance behind her back. Playing such games was perhaps a bit much.
Therefore, if they were not after her, they could be after the room.
Whatever it was, something here had caught their attention.
As a pragmatist who disliked wasting effort, Flossie Wright didn’t panic about searching the room for something. She had no clue what to look for anyway. Rather than tampering around, it was better for her to stay idle in her room, letting the prey find out for her.
Closing her laptop, Flossie moved to the wall near the window. She pulled the curtain aside to clearly see, with the dim light from outside, the shadowy figure in the courtyard. Unexpectedly, a look of laziness swept over her eyes, the aura of a predator lurking in the dark taking full control of its prey.
Under the still of the night, the sound of a stray cat came from the other side of the wall, startling the figure hiding beneath it.
Flossie squinted slightly before releasing the curtain. She retreated to her bed in the frigid night wind, quickly removing her two coats, wrapping herself in a blanket, and feigning sleep, as quiet as though she were never there.
The shadowy figure, upon hearing the sound, had swiftly moved up along the pipes and silently infiltrated the balcony with full alertness. He looked around before making the decision of going inside. Seeing the swaying curtain, he hesitated, noticing something was off. Scrunching his eyebrows, he only realized that the French window was open after a while, leading to his sudden understanding.
"Damned lunatic!"
With a clenched jaw, the shadow cursed in a low voice.
He insisted that the miniature cameras installed in each room were usable. So why on earth did the one in this room malfunction? He blamed the lady living here for intentionally seeking death by leaving the French window open in freezing weather, which led to the damage of the surveillance equipment due to the cold temperature inside the room.
His mouth twitched at the thought, still grumbling in his heart before tiptoeing restively into the room.
The moment he pulled aside the curtains, he cautiously looked around the room. After seeing Flossie sleeping peacefully on her bed without a sign of disturbance, he let out a silent sigh of relief. He walked into the room in the lightest steps possible, looking for what he was after in the darkness, without making a sound. Clearly, he was specially trained.
Despite his careful observation, he could never have imagined that Flossie, whom he had completely ignored, was paying attention to his every move from the darkness, not missing a single action.
What he was after turned out to be a book.
A book randomly placed on the bookshelf.
In less than two minutes, that book ended up in his hands.
