The night was getting darker, the sea breeze stronger.
More and more new recruits were coming ashore, and more and more people were noticing the amphibious scouts having a party on the beach. They gathered together, chatting and laughing loudly on trivial matters, nothing serious, but just by looking at them, one could sense their joy.
However, what attracted these new recruits instead of the handsome men were the delicacies set up on the barbecue grill.
Various kinds of roasted meats and vegetables filled the air with their sumptuous aroma, with the added seasoning making it even more inviting. Just listening to the sizzling sound alone lured out all their cravings, and they just couldn’t wait to rush over and steal some.
"Yo, you guys are back just in time." Winsley Scott was seen from distance, walking over with several freshly grilled lamb skewers in his hand, smiling brightly inviting everyone, "All hungry, right? The canteen’s closed today, you all come over and eat together."
By the time he finished speaking, he had only gotten halfway to them when all the new recruits who heard the call started running towards him. Gusts of wind blew around him as hands reached out to grab the beef skewers from his hand. As a veteran soldier, he did not assert himself, allowing them to snatch away his skewers until only one was left.
With some embarrassment, Winsley Scott looked at the approaching Flossie Wright, Becca Reyes, and Janice Wood, subconsciously reaching up to scratch his buzz cut. He ended up sheepishly offering the last skewer to Janice Wood, "Here, this is for you."
"Ah, thank you."
Janice Wood gratefully accepted the skewered meat, but the moment she took it, she was reminded of Winsley Scott’s once ardent confession, which had her stiffen up and go slightly pink in the face.
It seemed that Winsley Scott was also embarassed. He quickly turned his attention to Flossie and Becca Reyes, "I will get some for both of you."
"No need," Becca Reyes casually responded, gave Flossie a meaningful look, then turned to Winsley Scott, "We will get our own."
"Oh," Winsley Scott nodded vaguely, then added, "Alright then."
After Becca Reyes’ clear hint, both she and Flossie moved away, leaving Janice and Winsley to themselves.
Although she had no intention of playing matchmaker for Janice and Winsley, being a third wheel was indeed quite awkward.
However, Janice, who was already nervous, almost felt her heart leap to her throat as she watched the two walk away.
Becca Reyes, thinking she had accomplished a great deed, began to hustle for BBQ. In their hunger, there was no need for manners and rules; whoever got the food, owned it. Even if it was a life and death struggle, as long as one got the food, then there was no problem.
Unbeknownst to her, fully invested in the food war, Flossie, who was originally with her, had already been called away by Rowdy Brightwill. Without any effort, her hands were filled with various kinds of barbecue, which were so expertly cooked that they were incredibly tantalizing.
Flossie didn’t bother to be polite with Rowdy Brightwill. She simply thanked him, stopping him in his tracks before he could get more meat, then started eating at the side in leisure.
She was always a calm person, not shoving food down her throat like others, and everything she did was orderly. Despite simply eating barbecue, there was a hint of elegance in her relaxed demeanor.
