Cassie Ferguson had just finished strapping on her military saber.
Then came a "plop" as something was thrown onto the bank.
Startled for a moment, Cassie almost subconsciously turned towards the sound.
It was two fish.
The fish, skewered by the sharp end of a bamboo stick, were not yet dead and were struggling fiercely at the water’s edge, hopping and jumping as if fighting for their last chance.
Instinctively, Cassie frowned.
What was faster was still to come.
In that brief moment of distraction, she heard the sound of the river water being disturbed. She glanced to the side and saw Flossie Wright carrying her bamboo rod, already on her way back.
And on the lower end of her rod, there was another fish, still wriggling.
In just a few minutes, she had easily caught three fish.
"Are you coming too?"
Arriving at the shore, Flossie propped her fishing rod to one side and gave Cassie a faint look.
Cassie gave her a cold glance in return.
Then she looked away.
Without answering her, she directly took off her shoes and socks, rolled up her pants, and walked into the river with her bamboo rod.
Flossie touched her nose and didn’t concern herself further.
If Cassie hadn’t come, it would have been perfectly fine for Flossie to help her, but since she was there and not at all appreciative, Flossie no longer felt inclined to offer assistance.
That said—
The water in this river was truly cold.
After tossing her bamboo rod aside, Flossie walked over to her shoes and socks. Looking up unexpectedly, she caught a glimpse of Cassie’s tightly knitted brows and saw a flicker of light in her eyes.
Quickly putting on her shoes and socks, Flossie then took out her military saber to deal with the three fish.
With that heavy sound, water splashed everywhere.
As Flossie was gutting the third fish, she couldn’t help but lift her eyes to look towards the center of the river.
There, standing in the water, Cassie held tightly to her stick, and as she lifted it, a fish appeared at the end of the saber.
It was off-center, piercing only half the fish’s body, but it proved she had succeeded.
Flossie withdrew her gaze.
She continued to work on the fish in her hands.
Her movements were as fast as ever, so by the time Cassie returned to the shore with her stick, Flossie had already dealt with the last fish and strung them all together with a piece of parachute cord.
During this time, she hadn’t even glanced at Cassie but picked up the fish and prepared to leave.
Cassie paused for a moment on the bank.
The cold water soaked her feet, chilling her until she nearly lost all sensation. She knew the bone-chilling coldness of standing in the river water.
With a frosty look in her eyes and an icy expression on her face, Cassie fixed her gaze on Flossie’s composed figure, her mood growing darker.
It was only after Flossie’s figure had disappeared that Cassie finally slowly shifted her gaze.
Without bothering to put on her shoes and socks, she squatted barefoot by the river’s edge and quickly began processing the fish she had caught.
Flossie Wright arrived first at the rendezvous point.
It was situated upstream on the river.
The spot for making fire had been chosen under a towering tree.
The light drizzle was not enough to extinguish the campfire, but it made the location much safer.
As Flossie approached, Devina Millet was not there. Instead, Bonnie Reyes was tending to the flames around the campfire, carefully maintaining the fire.
"Back already?"
Seeing Flossie, a smile appeared on Bonnie’s face.
However, her gaze lingered behind Flossie a few times, and when she didn’t see Cassie, her smile unexpectedly stiffened.
"Um," she paused, thinking for a moment before finally asking, "Where’s Cassie?"
