The cold wind blew gently.
Cheeks, ears, neck, all felt a touch of chill.
Flossie Wright finally reached her destination.
From afar it wasn’t clear, but when she got closer, the signs of battle were unmistakable.
The grass was trampled, bushes broken, in some places the carnage was evident, and near her there were clear marks of bullets having grazed by.
Therefore, the initial judgment could be dismissed.
They hadn’t left the area; this was their battlefield.
Where were the people?
Flossie had approached while sticking close to cover, to avoid being targeted from the shadows, but hiding also meant her field of view was limited, unable to spot the fuller picture around her.
Even if there were people hidden and lying in ambush all around, she couldn’t be certain of neither the enemy’s nor her allies’ positions.
Accidentally firing at her own red team would be...
Anyway, it was just a trial to see if there was anyone there in the first place.
After some thought, Flossie raised her rifle and aimed straight ahead.
The trigger was pulled.
She fired towards the most likely hiding spot.
Whether there was someone there or not, she would find out based on what happened after she fired.
With that thought, before Flossie’s plan could take full shape, she heard a "bang bang bang—" sound.
All directed towards her.
Flossie’s mouth twitched, and seeing the trees around her pierced by bullets, alarms went off in her head.
With such intense gunfire, staying there would’ve been a literal death wish.
Without hesitation, Flossie tiptoed and leaned to the right, her whole body moving away from the original spot like the wind, dodging the concentrated gunfire.
At first, the gunfire followed her movement, but soon the shooters realized that Flossie was moving too fast for their bullets to catch her.
To avoid wasting ammunition, the shooting ceased completely.
Yet, no one realized that Flossie’s manoeuvres might very likely lead her straight into the path of the ambushers.
And just by chance, as soon as Flossie stopped, she noticed someone lying at her feet, causing her eyebrows to twitch.
As soon as she steadied herself, she felt a dagger pressed against her lower back.
She was in big trouble.
Without immediately lowering her gun to surrender, the grip on her rifle tightened, and Flossie’s expression turned cold.
"Flossie Wright?"
Before Flossie could prepare for what came next, a low voice came from below.
At the same time, the dagger at her back was withdrawn in an instant.
The voice sounded familiar; Flossie glanced downward and immediately saw Nancy Phillips’s face.
Previously lying prone and aiming, Nancy was now half-crouching on the ground, her military knife just withdrawn and sheathed once again.
Looking up in confusion, Nancy stared at Flossie, "Are you the support?"
Glancing at the opposite side, Flossie crouched down.
She simultaneously contacted Sandy Cruz and Mariana Buck, who were still behind.
"The opposite side is blue army," Flossie reported the situation, paused, and then added, "Operate on your own."
The three of them were used to acting independently.
They could only cooperate with each other during combat.
What specific actions to take depended on their own discretion.
"Received."
Over the earpiece, Sandy’s crisp voice floated through.
