Raised a hand, pushed open the door.
Instantly, what appeared before her eyes was Ella Pemberton standing beside Jessie Grain’s bed, flipping through a reference book.
She was reading intently, only turning her head when she heard the door open. A trace of surprise lingered in her eyes.
Then, the surprise dissipated, leaving only a gentle smile on her expression.
"Is the training over?"
Closing the book, Ella Pemberton smiled at her.
Looking at her intently, Flossie Wright nodded lightly.
Soon after, Jessie Grain also walked in, showing a moment of surprise upon spotting Ella Pemberton, but quickly recovering her composure and greeted amiably, "Captain Pemberton."
"Everyone’s back, huh," Ella Pemberton said, her smile deepening as she looked at them fondly, "I hope I’m not holding you up for too long?"
"Go ahead."
Shaking her head slightly, Jessie Grain spoke calmly.
"Just to let you know, I’m not planning on being your Instructor for the time being. If Franklin Cody doesn’t have other matters, he will continue to be your Instructor," Ella Pemberton said composedly.
"Is this an announcement?" Jessie Grain raised an eyebrow.
Ella Pemberton nodded.
"Then," Jessie Grain chuckled, "we haven’t any reason to refute it."
What she meant was, they would have to accept whatever had already been decided, however unwilling they might be, since they couldn’t change it.
Ella Pemberton gave her a look.
This kid was quite sensible.
Meanwhile, Flossie Wright beside her was emotionless, seemingly indifferent altogether.
"In a few days, you and Nancy Phillips have the re-examination, don’t you?" Seeing they had no objections, Ella Pemberton shifted the topic timely.
"That’s right." Jessie Grain’s gaze lingered on the book in her hand.
"How’s your review going?"
Jessie Grain measured her response.
"The truth." Ella Pemberton stared at her, her expression turning more serious.
Sitting up straight, Jessie Grain replied simply, "I’ll pass."
I’ll pass.
Not bluster, nor with vehement assurance, she was very collected as if stating a predetermined fact.
After observing her for a few moments, Ella Pemberton smiled gently and continued, "What about Nancy Phillips’ situation?"
"That," Jessie Grain paused then turned her head with a helpless smile, "I don’t know."
"Fine, I’ll go find her later."
With that, Ella Pemberton handed her the book she was holding.
Nodding, Jessie Grain took the book from her.
Flossie Wright stood aside for a while, noting that the conversation between Ella Pemberton and Jessie Grain had turned to training. Since she couldn’t interject, she went to grab her clothes and took the opportunity to take a shower.
By the time she finished, the two were still chatting.
All this time, Ella Pemberton had been very concerned about their psychological state, and chatting was the best way to gauge it.
After her shower, Flossie Wright was also pulled into a few exchanges.
They were trivial matters, and Flossie Wright responded to each accordingly, showing due respect in front of Ella Pemberton.
Regardless of everything else, the very fact that Ella Pemberton, after suffering a miscarriage unexpectedly, bore no grudge against anyone and even persuaded her own family to let her come back here,
Such breadth of mind, spirit, and perseverance earned Flossie Wright’s recognition.
It was past midnight when Ella Pemberton finally prepared to leave.
After she had gone, Jessie Grain and Flossie Wright exchanged glances, a conjecture faintly taking shape in the back of their minds.
If they weren’t mistaken—
This one hour had likely been deliberately carved out by Ella Pemberton.
