"Boom——"
Flashes of electricity and thunder, a tremendous noise echoed through the sky, as if it were resonating from right beside them, giving them goosebumps.
Flossie Wright, who was always at the back of the group, suddenly furrowed her brows after the thunderclap, halting her steps to look at the sky partially obscured by sparse treetops, while signaling them to stop.
The darkness was insurmountable, making it impossible to see anything.
The thunder was deafening, making it impossible to hear anything.
However, her intuition told her that something was definitely wrong.
"What is it?"
Calvin Ramos was the first to turn around. He shot Flossie a puzzled look, but soon his eyes followed hers to the sky, his eyebrows furrowed after a while.
Gradually, the distant noise became clear, like something rushing in the air, accompanied by a furious wind, which caused the tree branches to rustle and bend down.
"Damn, that looks like a bomber, and... a Mi-17?"
Watching several black shadows that flashed past from afar, Stuart Weston couldn’t help but gasp, but after the initial shock, there was only unexplained worry.
Why on earth would someone fly a bomber here in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night? There could be no good reason...
Becca Reyes wiped her face, which was covered with water droplets, puzzled and tense, "Didn’t they say that the exercise would officially start tomorrow?"
"Apparently," Flossie Wright handed her the gun, gazing at the bomber heading towards their campsite indifferently, "they were lying."
The moment she stopped speaking, a louder noise erupted from a distance. The deafening explosions drowned out the sound of the thunder, and amid the bright lightning, they remained planted in place, clearly hearing the commotion far away.
The real explosion, despite being a thousand kilometers away, could still be heard clearly.
"What happened? How did they find our location so quickly?"
Becca Reyes clenched the gun in her hand, she tried to connect with Austin Shepherd and the others via the communication device, but all she could hear was the static, which eventually disappeared completely in less than ten seconds. The communication was completely cut off.
"I don’t know."
Stuart Weston shook his head, his face was heavy.
The four of them fell into silence, their eyes all looking in the direction of the commotion, but all of them quietly stood their ground in the midst of the rain cleaning this piece of land, unceasing and relentless.
Time passed slowly, almost half an hour had passed before the noise finally subsided.
"Should we go back and check?"
When no more explosion could be heard, Stuart Weston unconsciously swallowed and tentatively asked the other three.
As soon as he finished speaking, Flossie Wright had already picked up her gun and began heading back to their campsite.
Becca Reyes was stunned; she met Calvin Ramos’s eyes during her hesitation. His warm gaze swept over her, mysteriously causing ripples in her heart. She wanted to confirm something, but he had already looked away.
"Let’s go."
In the sound of the rain, Calvin Ramos’s voice seemed distant but landed clearly in their ears.
In just a moment, Flossie Wright, who was holding the flashlight, had already walked tens of meters into the forest. Her faint figure moved amongst the trees, as if it could disappear into the darkness at any moment with the light. Therefore, they didn’t pause and quickly caught up.
The muddy ground after the rain was already difficult to navigate. Plus, the road had never been trodden, they were essentially the pioneers, which further challenged their progress. It had been unnoticed while they initially aimlessly searched for food, but as they returned, they realized that they had probably been walking on this path for more than half an hour.
