For them, he could only be a friend. The word "comrades" mocked the memory of other comrades who died in that battle.
Everyone knew the friend had betrayed for the sake of his own life, his wife, and his unborn child. But he couldn’t escape his destiny. He died in a stray bullet accident, without ever getting a chance to see his wife and child one last time.
Later, Glenn Hutchinson hid this fact. He fabricated a condolence payment out of his own pocket and with his comrades went to visit the friend’s nearly due wife, telling her that her husband had died heroically for his country.
No one expected the friend’s wife would die of massive bleeding during labor. When Glenn Hutchinson learned the news, he also found himself responsible for their newborn son, Flynn Reid.
This was the wife’s dying wish, which one might also argue she had calculated long before.
Bad news travels fast. She had already known about her husband’s deeds in the hospital. She prepared herself to die when she insisted on not having a cesarean section.
She refused to let her child grow up under a cloud of shame, so she decided she couldn’t continue to live in this world.
Only by her leaving this world with her husband, would someone else accept their innocent child.
She told the doctor to hand the baby to Glenn Hutchinson. She wanted to force Glenn to accept her child.
This was a premeditated trap, a plot that Glenn strongly abhorred.
As the child had no other relatives, the only options were Glenn or the orphanage.
Not until he saw the child crying loudly in his arms, his little arms and legs flailing in the air. After crying, the baby let out a strange laugh. Glenn was silent for a long while, but the next day he took the child home to his parents, who were completely taken by surprise.
He never explained the background of the child. Initially, Glenn’s parents suspected that he had a secret child and suggested that he should marry the child’s mother. However, after Glenn’s grandfather made inquiries in anger, they vaguely understood the truth of the matter and accepted the child without objection, they later came to regard him as their own grandson.
Flynn Reid was never told about any of this, but he had an vague sense of it, and so he never asked why he had a "Daddy" but no "Mommy".
"He’s too smart."
By the end, Flossie Wright’s gaze fell on Flynn Reid again, revealing rare tenderness in her eyes.
This child is too smart, too mature, too sensible, far beyond his peers.
But being smart isn’t necessarily a good thing.
Ignorance can be bliss. Not seeing the world, and being oblivious to people’s thoughts and intentions, is perhaps the greatest happiness.
She rested her hand on her chin and gently rubbed her fingers, lost in thought. But then she noticed something out of the corner of her eye. She was awakened from her reverie by a piece of white paper which suddenly disappeared.
When she turned to look, she saw the cotton ball that was in her hand a moment ago, float in mid-air and precisely land in the trash can not far away.
With a slight frown, Flossie turned towards Glenn Hutchinson and met his earnest and stern gaze.
"If you don’t like it, don’t eat it," Hutchinson said calmly, giving Flossie an explanation.
There was a hint of hesitation, but Flossie shrugged her shoulders indicating that she had accepted his explanation.
