Just as Rowdy Brightwill was hesitating about whether or not to leave, a sudden roar came from the staircase, naturally drawing his attention.
He walked a few steps down the corridor in the other direction, just around the corner when he saw a man gripping a female nurse, his knife pressed against her neck while he roared aggressively at the approaching crowd.
The man’s red eyes looked as if they had been stained with blood.
One look at his ferocious facial expression was enough to suggest that his emotions were extreme, and he was likely on the brink of collapse.
As Rowdy Brightwill remained alert, he couldn’t help but look at the man a few times, feeling a strange sense of familiarity.
"She’s innocent, please let her go..."
"His death has nothing to do with us, calm down."
"Don’t get agitated, let’s talk it out calmly."
Those who had gathered were obviously people who knew the inside story. A few nurses and doctors stood by, desperately trying to persuade him. The expressions of terror on their faces betrayed their fear that the man’s knife might dig a little deeper and kill the hostage nurse.
Rowdy Brightwill stared at the man’s face for a long time, then at his dirty, sea-coloured camouflage attire, and gradually, some vague memories seemed to surface.
He was a former teammate...
Realizing this, Rowdy Brightwill’s surprise was unmistakable.
Although it had been almost two years, he could still recall that face.
The teammate who had once applied for amphibious reconnaissance selection with him, but was eliminated in the first month. Because their training schedule was so tight, the new recruits hardly had any time to interact, let alone recognize each other amongst hundreds of people; at most, they would seem vaguely familiar.
Rowdy Brightwill could not recall his name, but he knew he was still stationed at the Base, only he had transferred to other Forces, and they had not met again ever since.
Seeing his former teammate raging in front of him, a grown man threatening others while holding a nurse hostage and crying inconsolably, Rowdy Brightwill felt profoundly uncomfortable even to think about it.
He had quietly infiltrated the crowd, casually pulling over a nurse who was nervously standing by, and asked in a low voice, "What happened?"

"Rowdy..." The nurse recognized him, was about to call his name, but suddenly realized something. She hastily covered her mouth to stop herself, and then, after many revolving eye movements, seemed to come to her senses, and started to explain, "They just came back from a mission. His teammate was injured and brought to the hospital, but he could not be saved."
"Is that so?" Rowdy Brightwill’s voice was somewhat heavy.
Yes, the death of a comrade was not something easy to take, even if it was not a comrade he knew or worked with. But the fact that they were in military uniform made them comrades.
But Rowdy Brightwill couldn’t understand. Being grieved about a comrade’s death was expected, but such an extreme reaction was not. Even more so now that he had taken a nurse hostage, so there was certainly more to this than met the eye.
"Uh," the nurse glanced at Rowdy Brightwill hesitantly, then looked around, slightly leaning towards Rowdy Brightwill to whisper,"Because, he and the dead soldier were very close."
Rowdy Brightwill subconsciously opened his mouth, intending to delve further, but suddenly realizing something, he stopped short. As surprise slid across his eyes, he looked somewhat stunned.
