Everything was as usual.
Flossie Wright had just finished her nightly training when Austin Shepherd detained her, saying that Bard Walker needed to see her.
Despite being so tired that she just wanted to go back to sleep, military orders could not be disobeyed, and in the end, she still went.
"Reporting!"
Standing at the door, Flossie Wright called out.
Soon, Bard Walker’s voice came from inside the office.
Flossie Wright walked in, looked around, and saw only Bard Walker sitting behind the desk—and, um, a phone in his hand.
"You’re here?"
Looking at her, Bard Walker asked indifferently.
Flossie Wright responded to this redundant question.
"Are you still able to keep up with the training?" Bard Walker asked again.
She replied blandly.
"Has your high fever gone down?"
Her brow twitched, Flossie Wright was getting a little impatient.
Bard Walker calling her over couldn’t possibly be to ask about these trivial matters, but even so, the small talk before getting to the point was too much.
Naturally, Bard Walker noticed her mood, and guessing that she was pretty tired these past few days, he didn’t waste more of her time and simply handed over the phone, "Your call."
With a frown, Flossie Wright walked over and took the phone.
She glanced at the screen and realized the call was ongoing.
Note: Hutchinson.
"What’s up?"
As soon as she brought the phone to her ear, Flossie Wright asked flatly.
Immediately, a deep and husky voice came from the other side, "Miss you."
Flossie Wright didn’t feel like responding.
"How’s training going?"
Though it sounded like casual conversation, there was an inadvertent tenderness in his tone.
After some thought, Flossie Wright replied, "It’s okay."
"Can you keep going?" Glenn Hutchinson inquired.
She responded without hesitation.
After a pause, Glenn Hutchinson added, "I’ll come over in a while."
"For what?" Flossie Wright raised an eyebrow.
"To bring you a knife."
Her voice laced with slight surprise, Flossie Wright cocked her head slightly.
"Yeah," Glenn Hutchinson affirmed, speaking meaningfully, "Didn’t you see?"
Flossie Wright was clueless.
"It’s nothing," Glenn Hutchinson quickly said, "Have Bard Walker show you the photos."
Looking up, Flossie Wright glanced in Bard Walker’s direction.
Meanwhile, Bard Walker had already opened the laptop, pulled up three images, and quietly showed them to Flossie Wright.
In his work, Bard Walker wouldn’t be lenient with Flossie Wright; what needed to be done would be done. But in her personal life... he would also create opportunities for Hutchinson whenever possible.
After scanning the images, Flossie Wright’s eyes lit up, and she said into the phone, "The first one."
Glenn Hutchinson chuckled softly in acknowledgment.
All three knives were in his possession.
But if she didn’t like them, they would be a burden. Thus, he intended to give Flossie Wright her favorite one. That’s why he took the chance before her phone was turned in to let her choose.
He hadn’t expected that she wouldn’t check Whatsapp, and he hadn’t had time to call her.
No one at the navy would check private things on a phone, nor would anyone tamper with her Whatsapp. And he trusted Flossie Wright; she wouldn’t delete Whatsapp out of boredom.
With that thought, Glenn Hutchinson became contemplative.
"Anything else?" Flossie Wright asked when she heard no response from the other side for a while.
"What is it?"
"Take care of yourself," he said in a low voice, his tone not hiding a certain ambiguity.
Flossie Wright replied perfunctorily.
After that, Glenn Hutchinson rambled a bit more, instructing her on some protective methods during training and advising her to be psychologically prepared. His words made Flossie Wright suppress the urge to hang up by force.
She believed Glenn Hutchinson would have found out about her issues these past two days.
Glenn Hutchinson skillfully avoided mentioning her two setbacks. Instead, he comforted her in another way, and the slight frustration she had felt over an unexpected failure in her forte was soothed by his calm and composed words.
She liked knives and guns.
Her marksmanship had been honed in life-and-death situations, so she had always been confident about it.
Just like how she used to be confident about her own abilities.
Although there was an unexpected situation that morning, a loss was a loss. On the real battlefield, whether she had a fever or multiple injuries, if she missed a single shot, it could mean her demise in the underworld.
Therefore, she wouldn’t harbor resentment over today’s incident, but she would not be complacent.
But Glenn Hutchinson said, "Be prepared, you could face failure at any time. With your abilities, you can handle those situations."
He gave her a very high appraisal.
Such affirmation.
Toward the end, Flossie Wright felt a bit amused.
After about ten minutes of conversation, Flossie Wright finally hung up the phone with a sense of relief lifted off her shoulders.
"Finished talking?"
Taking back the phone she passed to him, Bard Walker smiled broadly.
Flossie Wright responded indifferently.
"Don’t rush off just yet," Bard Walker put down the phone, leaned back in his chair, and looked up at her slightly, "I want to ask you a few things."
"Go ahead," Flossie Wright said calmly.
"With the new recruits and the veterans together, are there many conflicts?"
"Many." She answered pensively, then added after a brief pause, "Very many."
"Analyze for me, how did the four captains handle it?"
"You don’t know?" Flossie Wright asked back.
"I know." Bard Walker stated seriously, "I just want to hear what you think about the other three."
With a slight frown, Flossie Wright thought for a moment before saying, "They all handled it well. Sandy Cruz was brutal, but effective, Calvin Ramos relied on persuasion and resolution, and would use force. As for Jessie Grain..."
Just as she was about to continue, she saw Bard Walker looking at her thoughtfully.
Considering it, Flossie Wright commented, "She’s very impressive."
Very impressive.
She handled it well in every aspect.
"Hmm," Bard Walker nodded, then leaned forward suddenly, "Do you know how the other instructors have rated you?"
Flossie Wright looked at him nonchalantly, seemingly uninterested.
Looking at her, Bard Walker spoke deliberately, "Among the four captains, your assessment is the highest."
Flossie Wright was taken aback.
