It seemed like—
She was smiling?
Parachuting, desert, wilderness survival, those harsh days...
What was it that made her so happy?
The soldier couldn’t figure it out.
Just as he couldn’t understand the meaningful smile Flossie Wright had in the past, whether it was an admission or a denial.
She really was a puzzling person.
A month later.
As it approached June, the weather gradually turned hot.
The endless ocean, now dotted with connected archipelagos, stood out distinctly.
Though desolate, the place was lush with trees and enough water sources; all green plants appeared vibrant in early summer.
Besides, snakes, insects, birds, and beasts were essential presences.
In the middle of the day, under the blazing sun, Flossie Wright, dressed in tattered jungle camouflage, was sitting under a coconut tree for shade.
About two meters ahead, a campfire was burning with a snake and a bird roasting above it.
They weren’t roasted particularly well, but the aroma of meat lingered, carried by the sea breeze across the beach.
Flossie Wright was holding a wild coconut, leisurely poking a hole in it with a knife, then sipping through a thin bamboo straw.
And then—
"Flossie Wright!"
Out of the blue, came a loud shout.
Putting down the bamboo straw, Flossie looked up and saw the figure running out of the woods.
It was Joshua Bailey, whom she hadn’t seen in a while, wearing his usual army uniform, but with his jacket nowhere in sight and his shirt sleeves rolled up to his arms. Under the scorching sun, he still looked dashing, albeit with a roguish flair.
Flossie watched him approach.
Before she could even greet him, Joshua’s voice rose, "Damn! It really is you!"
Flossie lazily cast him a sideways glance.
Joshua, as if seeing a ghost, circled her twice, checking her out from head to toe until Flossie tossed the wild coconut his way, and only when he caught it did he seem to fully comprehend the reality.
Willing to accept the fact.
But, his expression remained one of shock.
How could there be such a shocking thing?!
Flossie Wright completed in thirty-one days what others could only accomplish in two months!
Even adding the initial three days, Flossie spent just thirty-four days!
This this this—
𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖
How could this be possible?!
Alright, it’s not that Flossie couldn’t accomplish the impossible, but—
How on earth did she finish earlier than everyone else?!
By a whole day!
Oh man, if he’d encountered someone like her during the selection, he would’ve certainly gathered people to gang up on her!
Absolutely infuriating!
"What," Flossie raised an eyebrow, her lips curling gently, "am I handsome?"
"Handsome!"
Joshua Bailey responded without hesitation.
Simply too handsome.
Joshua waved the coconut in his hand, glancing at the lounging Flossie and then at the flickering campfire nearby, his face suddenly taking on an odd expression.
One had to admit, Flossie Wright was indeed "handsome."
When she asserted that she would complete the mission before others after being discharged, there were hardly any who believed her.
Joshua Bailey chose to believe even just a little, solely because he trusted Flossie’s character.
Having been an instructor for so long, he somewhat understood Flossie’s style; she wasn’t the type to boast.
So, she succeeded now.
With incredible excellence, she accomplished this astounding challenge.
Joshua Bailey had arrived half an hour ago. After learning from Harris Caleb that Flossie was the first to arrive and understanding the situation, he rushed over immediately.
Joshua still wanted to know how she did it.
Simply unthinkable.
So, Joshua crouched down, offering the coconut to Flossie as he humbly inquired, "How did you manage it?"
"Shortcut."
Taking the coconut, Flossie continued sipping, lazily answering him.
"What shortcut?" Joshua asked eagerly.
Who wouldn’t want a shortcut?!
If Flossie had taken the original path, she’d have broken her leg before getting here on time!
However, Joshua had once studied seven maps with Willie Ash, choosing the best route based on the terrain, but whatever calculations they did, it always exceeded thirty-two days, not counting any unforeseen incidents.
Flossie raised an eyebrow, gesturing toward the campfire.
Raising his eyes in puzzlement, upon seeing the snake and bird beside the fire, Joshua suddenly realized.
"I’ll help you roast."
Joshua offered, catching on.
Saying that, he moved to sit near the campfire under the blazing sun.
Flossie didn’t mind chatting with Joshua a bit more.
Actually, the route she chose wasn’t far off from Joshua’s, but often, just looking at a map isn’t enough; it’s nothing more than armchair theorizing. Being out in the wild, she’d adjust her route as needed.
There were a few times during training when Flossie had delays, like getting lost, encountering swamps, or facing floods in the jungle...
But, fate favored her, providing her with several shortcuts.
For instance, between two mountains, there was an abandoned rope; using it saved Flossie a day’s time. In glaciers and swamps, she encountered similar lucky breaks, saving considerable time back then.
As for this archipelago—
She had to say, during her time in the Marine Corps, they’d been sent here for wilderness survival once before.
For her, familiar with the terrain, there were a few accidents in between, or she would have arrived even earlier.
After hearing Flossie’s nonchalant recount, Joshua only felt his facial muscles stiffen.
Was it fate favoring her, or—
Did she genuinely possess extraordinary willpower?
Surviving a month in the wild without any chance to rest, always on edge, if it were anyone else, they’d probably have collapsed by now.
Lost in thought, Joshua suddenly heard Flossie’s light laughter.
It was clear she wasn’t greeting him.
So, Joshua glanced in the direction she was looking, only to be startled once again.
