That night, at Flossie Wright’s suggestion, Captain Lin used his own stipend to cook a meal for the entire class. Though Neal Thompson and Yvonne Watson both excused themselves with various reasons, even Becca Reyes, who had just recovered from a fever, was forced to attend.
It was a farewell dinner for Flossie Wright and Becca Reyes, and at the same time, a welcome celebration for two comrades who had newly joined.
Flossie Wright, who had been "experimented" on by Rowdy Brightwill in the morning, also willingly took part in the cooking process.
However, after just stirring a few dishes, she was ordered by Captain Lin to go chop vegetables instead.
No one can excel in all aspects. Knowing how excellent Flossie was with a gun, Captain Lin certainly didn’t expect her cooking to be as impressive.
The dinner was lively and cheerful without any sense of sorrowful parting. After all, Flossie Wright and Becca Reyes weren’t really leaving for good. Generally, it was a scene of constant toasts and blessings.
Becca Reyes, still a bit weak after her fever, stayed till the very end before finally leaving.
Flossie Wright accompanied her as she left.
The night was peaceful with the sounds of laughter gradually fading away in the bone-chilling breeze.
"Flossie Wright."
Becca Reyes abruptly halted, her words heavy.
Flossie Wright also stopped, turning her head to look at her.
After biting her lip a moment, Becca Reyes couldn’t help but ask, "You and Calvin Ramos..."
From last night until now, she had been on pins and needles, wanting to ask questions but every time she looked into Flossie’s calm eyes, she held her tongue.
What kind of person was Flossie Wright?
She wasn’t really sure.
Besides, the Flossie she saw was not complete.
No one could be invincible so the powerful, calm, self-restrained and righteous Flossie she saw was merely her perception.
"You’re asking about last night, right?" Flossie said, helping her finish her sentence.
Becca Reyes looked up, very surprised.
Messaging her temple, Flossie Wright felt a headache coming on.
If it weren’t for Calvin Ramos pulling her into the situation, she wouldn’t have had to worry about so much.
The entire thing was a mess.
At this point, Flossie bluntly detailed what happened last night and at noon, including both of Calvin Ramos’s attitudes and behaviors.
He was the instigator, and now he was apologizing...
Did he find it amusing?
Either Calvin Ramos was planning something deeper, or he had other reasons he couldn’t reveal.
In any case, if he kept acting so recklessly, she might shoot him on impulse.
Sometimes, going too far can lead to one’s own downfall.
"He’s not that kind of person."
After hearing Flossie’s account, Becca Reyes frowned in disbelief and objected subconsciously.
The Calvin Ramos she knew was very gentle... how could he possibly...
What a headache!
"I don’t really know him."
Flossie Wright gave her a brief glance.
Becca Reyes sank into silence.
After quite a while, she abruptly asked, "Between Calvin Ramos and Captain Hutchinson, who do you admire more?"
"Does Calvin Ramos have any qualities for me to admire?" Flossie replied with a smile.
Her heart sank when she realized that someone she valued had been utterly dismissed by Flossie.
"Well," Flossie paused a moment and then added consolingly, "if you count acting skills, I do admire that part about him."
"I don’t want to hear you talk."
Taking a deep breath, Becca Reyes quickened her steps.
Shrugging, Flossie watched as Becca Reyes hurried off into the distance.
The disagreement between Flossie Wright and Becca Reyes was resolved within a mere few minutes of conversation.
Yet, the standoff between Yvonne Watson and Neal Thompson continued causing an unusually solemn atmosphere in the dormitory.
Everything was as usual.
The next day.
"Hey, should we go for a stroll later?"
The reenergized Becca Reyes, holding a washed potato, came over to Flossie Wright.
The entire Base was on holiday at the moment, and their cooking class was pretty lax, so they could totally go out as long as they got Captain Lin’s permission.
Once they got reassigned later, such opportunities would be scarce.
Flossie, still cutting potatoes, replied nonchalantly.
The peeled potato was swiftly transformed under her knife. As if by magic, the potato went from chunk to shred, with each chop resulting in a "thud" sound.
Her movements were always clean and swift. Before long, two potatoes were reduced to thin julienne strips under her hands.
While observing Flossie’s work from the side, Becca Reyes couldn’t help but shake her head.
It didn’t matter if she left the cooking class - there were plenty who could take her place. But if Flossie were to leave, those in charge of cooking in the class would definitely regret it.
After all, not everyone had Flossie’s nimble knife skills.
After chopping the vegetables and eating breakfast, Flossie and Becca Reyes tidied up and prepared to go out after informing Captain Lin.
"You two are going out?"
Yvonne Watson, standing by the door, tentatively asked.
"Yeah." Becca Reyes answered while tossing her wallet into her bag, then looked up at her, "Need anything?"
Yvonne Watson opened her mouth in surprise, at a loss for words.
She did have a favor to ask, but she hadn’t expected Becca Reyes to offer help.
Becca Reyes, who had just put on her jacket, raised an eyebrow at Yvonne.
A glance was enough to tell that Yvonne was waiting for something, hovering around the door since the moment they came in.
"Yes!" Yvonne Watson responded decisively, lowering her gaze, "Could...could you get me some underwear?"
Flossie and Becca Reyes were slightly taken aback, their gazes involuntarily slid towards Yvonne Watson’s chest.
Feeling their staring, Yvonne blushed and crossed her arms over her chest subconsciously.
The bustling street was full of people coming and going.
In the rushing traffic, a black Aventador slowly passed by.
The window on the passenger side was rolled down, revealing a man dressed in black.
Resting his elbow on the window, a gloved finger held a lit cigarette, the embers glowing intermittently.
In the car, smoke swirled around.
The driver pressed the earpiece, "Hmm," he said, then turned to the man, "Sliver, the target’s location has been confirmed."
"Let’s go."
The voice was calm, with a slight rasp.
