Belinda Nichols watched her, trailing alongside like a guardian, only responsible for controlling the loss of money.
Flossie Wright couldn’t possibly climb over the wall for no reason.
She spent some time dealing with the temporary card Glenn Hutchinson had set up.
By the time she returned to the street, it was already close to nine o’clock.
She glanced at her military watch, looked up at the night sky, and then at the people coming and going on the street.
This was a busy area, the street bustling with activity, and even at this hour, there were still quite a few pedestrians around.
Most of them were couples from the neighboring Medical College.
Nighttime rendezvous, ordering a bunch of barbecues at the Barbecue Restaurant, gathering to chat and laugh, or walking hand in hand down the street for a stroll...
Flossie Wright searched the street for silhouettes dressed in training uniforms like hers.
The Military Academy didn’t allow easy exit and entry, so there weren’t many to see on the street, making it easy to spot those in uniform.
But, after five minutes, she hadn’t seen Iris Dukes or Belinda Nichols, but she did spot another familiar figure.
Sophie Fitch walked among the crowd.
She was all alone.
She wasn’t wearing a uniform but had changed into casual clothes; a light pink long round-neck sweater, a white shirt underneath, black leggings, and pink long boots, dressed very sweetly.
A pink hairpin clipped onto her short black glossy hair, with a light makeup visibly applied on her face.
Clearly, she had dressed up with care.
Yet, at this moment, she was distraught, her head bowed, her shoulders trembling, and on her small face were two faint tear tracks.
Flossie Wright stopped walking, looking at her steadily; under the dim streetlights, she could still see the glimmer of tears in her eyes.
Flossie’s eyebrows knitted slightly.
Sophie Fitch almost ran into her in her absent-mindedness.
Helplessly, Flossie lifted a hand to steady her.
Through her tear-blurred eyes, Sophie Fitch opened them wide, recognizing Flossie Wright in surprise.
Flossie tossed a tissue to her.
Sophie Fitch hurriedly caught it.
"What happened?"
Flossie asked, one hand in her pocket, looking at her askance.
"It’s nothing, just tripped and fell,"
Sophie Fitch said as she wiped her tear-streaked face, her voice choking.
Flossie looked at her speechlessly.
From head to toe, she didn’t see any sign of injury on her.
Not to mention injuries, there wasn’t even a speck of dust.
No sign of having fallen at all.
Besides, being from the Military Academy, hanging around the Training Ground daily, practicing close combat, this girl was strong-willed and never once complained, let alone cry so bitterly over a fall.
This lie didn’t even convince Sophie Fitch herself.
"Flossie, why are you here?"
Struggling to wipe her tears, Sophie Fitch asked, looking at Flossie Wright.
But, even as her vision cleared for a few seconds, her eyes were filled with tears again, blurring her sight.
"Having a late-night snack."
Flossie casually replied, glancing up just in time to meet the gaze of someone looking their way.
The person looked at Sophie Fitch, then at her, intimidated by her cold gaze, quickened their pace to leave.
But, despite Flossie’s presence, Sophie Fitch’s obvious crying attracted glances from the surrounding passersby.
Under the night sky, in the light, Flossie Wright in her training uniform, with a slender figure and a cap covering most of her face, at a glance really looked like a guy.
