Early morning, around six o’clock.
Flossie Wright and Jessie Grain had joined the squad less than an hour ago, and as daylight gradually broke, they no longer needed to use their flashlights to see clearly in the mountain forest.
They were both seriously sleep-deprived; they had only slept for two hours the night before and now were relentlessly hiking. Both were somewhat fatigued.
Of course, holding up wasn’t a problem.
Four designated Forces members led the way, with two SWAT officers following behind; ever since they had officially joined the squad, no one had spoken to them.
The two of them followed in silence.
"Have you been in actual combat?"
Matching the pace with Jessie Grain, Flossie Wright, finding it rather dull, asked her quietly.
Jessie Grain was slightly startled, then nodded, responding, "Hmm."
Scanning her surroundings, Flossie Wright raised an eyebrow and inquired, "Is it always like this?"
Following her gaze, Jessie Grain understood she was referring to the solemn and silent atmosphere. After a moment’s thought, she nodded, "Pretty much."
In mission contexts, the objective is priority, and idle chatter is not commonplace.
During stealth operations, assuming there was no danger, they might chat out of sheer boredom.
Like now, they were obviously in a hurry to proceed; naturally, no one was making conversation.
Flossie Wright’s eyebrows twitched; she shrugged, signifying she understood.
With the Forces, this was her first real combat mission. As they say, with zero experience, there were many situations she didn’t understand.
She was accustomed to the atmosphere within the Mercenary Corps.
In her group, regardless of the activity, the mood was always lively.
Except when Daisy Deacon was angrily reprimanding someone, seldom was there such a serious and silent state.
It was just casual questioning, not something she pondered deeply.
However, their conversation fell upon the ears of the two SWAT officers behind them, who already had a dislike for Flossie Wright. They disdained her whispers and lack of situational awareness, adding to their condescension.
An unintentional act had made her quite unpopular.
Flossie Wright could clearly sense the hostility from the two behind her, but she didn’t pay it too much attention.
She maintained the pace, ensuring she kept up with them.
After a month of Devil training, along with her deliberate physical conditioning, her fitness hadn’t increased substantially but keeping up with these SWAT members was within her abilities.
No one spoke anymore as they continued.
Fifteen minutes later, just as they were about to descend a slope, and people ahead began to slide down, they heard a sudden "Ah—" from the front.
It wasn’t a cry of pain, but more like a shout of astonishment.
The moment the voice fell, Flossie Wright and Jessie Grain, who were sliding down the middle, instantly exchanged a glance. They quickly surveyed their surroundings and reached out to grab the shrubs beside them; their bodies instinctively leaned back, and in a short while, they stopped firmly.
Meanwhile, the two SWAT officers behind them weren’t so lucky. They were startled by the noise and, as they tried to steady themselves, encountered a rather steep slope.
What was fatal was that there were no weeds or shrubs around for them to hold onto!
As Flossie Wright and Jessie Grain steadied themselves, they had moved to the sides. Upon steadying themselves, they heard movement above and some muttered cursing; in a flash, the two officers slid into their line of sight.
Without a second thought, both of them reached out a hand, either grabbing the back of the neck or seizing a wrist, fingers gripping tightly to steady those who were hurtling down.
