The air of nonchalant fearlessness about her seemed to tell everyone that she alone has such audacious capital, a powerful aura that belonged to her requires no pretense.
"You, you, you... let go..."
A sharp pain came from his hand and the man’s face contorted in agony. No longer daring to taunt Flossie Wright, his tone immediately softened in surrender.
Gathering her chopsticks, Flossie loosened her grip slightly. The man’s hand quickly moved away as if fleeing. When he looked at Flossie again, it was as though he was looking at a devastating flood or a dangerous beast. Subconsciously, he took several steps back.
Darn it. No one told him the Forces could be so fierce. The normally frail and pampered people went in for just a short time and yet, they could incapacitate his hand with a pair of chopsticks!
The poor man was so distressed he wanted to cry. If he had known, he wouldn’t have come over at all. This wasn’t just about spoiling one’s fun at a get-together; it was plain suicide!
Fortunately, in this awkward moment, the squad leader finally recovered from the shock brought on by Flossie’s domineering behavior. He coughed lightly, cleared his throat, and finally said to them, "The dishes are all served. Don’t stand there. Let’s eat and chat."
With that cue for them to save face, the others around Flossie immediately scattered like birds, swiftly returning to their seats, worried that Flossie, in a good mood, might start poking them with her chopsticks.
Flossie was a soldier!
It was the first time they really grasped that fact.
She was forced to train in the Forces every day, while they sat in the office enjoying good food and drink, being served. How could they possibly fight against her?
Someone deliberately steered the conversation towards other people, gradually diverting the attention away from Flossie. They talked about their achievements and fun stories in society, and some even discussed their love life. After a while, it seemed as though they had all but forgotten Flossie’s presence, and they no longer mentioned her name.
After exchanging her chopsticks with the waiter, Flossie’s phone started to buzz vigorously. Thanks to all the noise around, no one noticed, and when she saw the incoming call was from Rowdy Brightwill, she hung up. She very swiftly received a text from Rowdy Brightwill asking her what was going on, and after scanning the lively crowd around her, she bluntly told Rowdy Brightwill that she was at a class reunion.
She thought that would be the end of it, but Rowdy Brightwill’s response was incredibly fast. He immediately asked her where she was, and a second message added, "Don’t cause too much trouble. I’ll come and back you up."
Hesitating for a moment, Flossie found it rather absurd, but she didn’t beat around the bush and sent him the address.
Just as she put her phone down, however, Patrick Morrison suddenly asked her in a cold voice, "Where are you serving now?"
Leisurely glancing at him, Flossie conservatively replied, "Navy."
Although her identity wasn’t particularly secretive and she could approximate the location, whether she would disclose that information depended on her mood. She felt she’d been courteous enough by giving a perfunctory answer to someone who had scrutinised her the moment they met.
However, his curiosity wasn’t crushed by her indifference. After a moment’s thought, he asked again, "Cameron Bailey?"
Picking up her wine glass, Flossie took a slow sip of red wine before suddenly raising her eyelids and asked in return, "And you, Ray?"
Patrick Morrison was taken aback and wisely chose not to continue his questioning.
Although he wasn’t sure what Flossie’s role was exactly, it was clear that Flossie was unwilling to tell him. If he put himself in her shoes, he definitely wouldn’t divulge any information about his position either, even if Flossie asked him.
