Because Flossie Wright didn’t discuss her plan with Janice Wood beforehand, Janice didn’t understand what she intended to do. Seeing Flossie’s actions, Janice had no choice but to put away her military knife, copying her by sitting on the side. But at the same time, she scrupulously kept an eye on the male soldiers nearby.
The two male soldiers, having narrowly escaped death, were filled with suspicion. There were indeed no female soldiers among their opponents so they couldn’t figure out what had happened. Baffled, they sat up, waiting for Flossie’s next words.
"Here’s the thing," Flossie predictably steered the conversation back to the main point, "we are new recruits from the new soldier’s company, over here for wilderness survival training. We were ambushed and fled here intending to lie low with you, what do you say?"
At the end of the sentence, Flossie asked casually. Despite her amiable tone, her clear eyes reflected in the moonlight were cold as ice.
The soldier next to Flossie was quick to refuse but before he could finish, a chill swept over him as Flossie’s knife found its way to his neck.
Killer intent, threat, and cold.
The air suddenly grew tense and even breathing became difficult.
The soldier felt a chill go through him, cold sweat breaking out on his forehead. He didn’t dare to meet Flossie’s pretty face.
"Of course," Flossie said with a smile, as if she had done nothing, "you can refuse, but we can easily kill you guys. Buddy, if you let us in, you have nothing to lose, but if we kill you guys here and there’s no one to change shift, the enemy might take advantage of this gap and sneak in..."
At this point, her words stopped, but the meaning was clear.
She had made their choices clear. Flossie’s life-or-death ultimatum had left them no choice.
"Fine, fine, fine!"
Driven to the wall, the two soldiers exchanged glances, weighed the pros and cons, and finally, although reluctantly, agreed.
Yet thinking about it, the agreement was really galling. They had been guarding peacefully, without meeting an enemy, but now had to deal with two troublesome female soldiers. If anyone found out, wouldn’t it be a complete loss of face?!
Having obtained their agreement, Flossie and Janice didn’t linger. Under the watchful and resentful gaze of the two men, they swaggered off.
Having smoothly passed the first barrier, their operation became much simpler. They both wore the same ocean camouflage; the fact that they were women could not be discerned in the dark. Most people besides the sentinels were asleep, making it easier for them to infiltrate the base.
The temporary base was not large — under 10 tents — and only one tent with soldiers on guard outside. It was obvious there lay the hostages.
Flossie and Janice effortlessly dealt with the two sentries just like before, only this time they showed no mercy.
"You’re dead," Flossie moved her knife against the soldier’s throat, her words carrying a definite threat, "Play by the rules."
Janice copied her, moving her knife slightly, then warned the soldier she had subdued in a low voice, "Stay silent."
The two soldiers hadn’t reacted completely before they were "killed" by them. By the time they realized the gender of their assailants, they were rendered silent. Their eyes nearly popping out of their heads in surprise, they watched the two women enter the tent without uttering a word.
In the end, they exchanged glances, their faces full of confusion—
Were there female soldiers on this mission?
"Could it be, a mistake somewhere?" After a tense silence, one of them said, puzzled.
"Or maybe..." The soldier next to him winked cunningly and subtly pointed at his gun.
The two communicated with their eyes, achieving a remarkable synchrony of thought.
Therefore, just as Flossie Wright and Janice Wood started to assess the situation of the hostages, a gunshot rang out. The loud bang echoed across the silent wilderness like a thunderclap.
