Soon, the cell phone on the coffee table buzzed again.
She lifted her eyes to glance at it.
The caller ID was still unknown, but the number was familiar.
Perry Reed.
With her uninjured hand, Flossie Wright reached for the phone and answered.
There was a pause from the other end, then a voice seemingly accompanied by the sound of a television asked, "Where are you?"
"In the city."
"It’s about the Forces?"
"Right, out training."
After a moment, Perry Reed broke it, "There’s been an earthquake in Vernon City."
"Just saw the news."
Flossie answered somewhat ambiguously, her mind seeming elsewhere.
"Your home..."
"Uh, saw it," Flossie cut him off, then added, "It’s collapsed."
She said it calmly.
Perry Reed paused, his voice weighing down, "If you want to go back, I can help you."
Flossie chuckled lightly, sounding nonchalant, "No need."
"Erina Taylor!"
Her name was called out, more forcefully.
"I’m here."
"It was you who asked us not to interfere with Eastlandia." His voice softened, "It’s your home."
"Since it’s collapsed, it’s pointless."
"You’ve done many pointless things, haven’t you?!" Perry Reed sounded annoyed.
This woman seemed to have no wounds, no vulnerabilities. But her heart once bled profusely.
No one could be like her.
Seemingly indifferent and unconcerned about her past, as if her free-spirited life never carried a trace of longing or regret.
But a person who values loyalty and friendship could never be heartless.
And they could never forget the memories that were etched into their hearts.
"I’ve done aplenty, but, I don’t want to do it now."
Answering lightly, Flossie reached for the remote and turned off the TV.
The tissue wrapped around her finger was mostly stained red.
Perry Reed brusquely demanded.
"This is Eastlandia. Even if I was to go there, it would be of no use. What for, gaze at the ruins? That’s meaningless. The same information can be found online. I can’t force anyone to hand over that piece of land, or even rebuild it. And that would be pointless." She paused and let out a sigh, "Everyone’s gone. An empty shell of a ruined home isn’t worth making a trip for."
"Regardless of whether it’s worth it or not, I just want to know, are you in pain?"
Every word was punctuated deliberately, the last few words carrying extra weight.
He was always so assertive.
Flossie gave a slight smile, got up and walked towards the window.
The sky was gradually getting lighter, but it was still a gray dullness.
"Even if the house hadn’t collapsed, I would never go back. It just reminded me of something," Flossie looked down at the street below, "You know, that’s not the reason."
She said it very calmly.
Perhaps, from beginning to end, her tone was very calm.
But what Perry Reed cared about was that she hadn’t answered his question.
After a long while, Perry Reed coldly stated, "I see."
Flossie suddenly called out to him.
"I’m just a normal person, so I’ve resented and hated, but I’ve let go now."
"Don’t pick at my scars."

The rain outside went pitter-patter.
The call had suddenly quietened down, so much so that she could hear Perry Reed’s breathing.
After a moment, he finally responded, "Alright."
Flossie hung up the phone.
Outside the window, a drizzle fell. The entire city was cloaked in a layer of gray.
