No one spoke, and of course, Flossie Wright wasn’t going to be the one to initiate a conversation.
So, the three of them did not utter a word during the journey.
The atmosphere was so awkward that Winsley Scott became eager when he saw the word "hospital," almost as eager as if he were seeing his own mother. He wished he could break into a run, or make a swift stride towards it. He was almost moved to tears.
The silence was broken as soon as they entered the hospital. Rowdy Brightwill had always been a charmer, ever since he was a child, and that did not change, even when he joined the Forces. The young girls at the hospital naturally flocked to him as soon as they spotted him, teasingly asking what wind brought him their way. Their flirtatious remarks seemingly ignored the presence of Flossie Wright and Winsley Scott.
Rowdy Brightwill maintained an appropriate distance from them, his face clearly showing his discomfort. He directly asked: "Where is the female soldier that was brought in by Austin Shepherd?"
"Wow, is Mr Shepherd here too?"
"Where is he? I want to see him."
"Third floor!"
Several nurses either surprised or delighted spoke up, all of them unable to suppress their teasing.
In this world, good-looking people invariably receive different treatment. If they know how to leverage this, it could give them a very different life.
There’s truth in the saying, ’beauty is only skin deep’.
Luckily, these nurses aren’t crazy fans. They just genuinely liked Rowdy Brightwill and came over for a chat. Plus, Rowdy Brightwill’s personality was endearing, so they were naturally happy to have a conversation with him.
Every time Winsley Scott saw Rowdy Brightwill being surrounded by so many nurses, he felt bitter and couldn’t help but move closer to Flossie Wright, complaining sarcastically, "Among our team, Austin Shepherd and Rowdy Brightwill are the most handsome and have great personalities. Every time they come to the hospital, they are treated like celebrities, with all the nurses flocking to their side, caring for them like their own sons."
However, before he finished his complaint, Flossie Wright had heard the words "third floor" and had already gotten up and headed for the stairs with her purse.
Winsley Scott stared blankly for a moment, before quickly following her.
As soon as they reached the third floor, they saw Austin Shepherd standing outside a hospital room, answering a phone call. As he spotted the arrival of Flossie Wright and Winsley Scott, he almost subconsciously nodded at them, giving them a warm smile before continuing his conversation on the phone. But by the time they approached him, he had already ended the call.
"She’s still running a bit of a fever, but her condition is fairly stable," Austin Shepherd explained before they could ask, smoothly putting his phone back in his pocket, "She’s still unconscious, but you two can go in and take a look."
With that, he courteously opened the door for them.
Flossie Wright gave him a slight nod as a greeting and then walked into the room with her purse.
Winsley Scott, who had initially wanted to step into the room, stopped abruptly. He looked at Austin Shepherd from head to toe with suspicion, his chubby face exuding caution. "Come to think of it, how come you were the one who brought her here?"
"I happened to be passing by," Austin Shepherd innocently shrugged, "Tianyi tossed responsibility on me."
Austin Shepherd’s position in the team was somewhat unique. Born from a renowned Military Academy and carrying a different rank, he was supposed to perform civilian duties. However, he had volunteered to join the amphibious combat team. Despite undergoing a series of selection processes from being a novice to becoming a qualified Frogman, he was often needed in the team for his intelligence and talent in research. So, often, he only participated in training, but he would join important drills when required.
