Watching him, feeling that determination, Bard Walker sighed in defeat.
He really couldn’t do anything about him.
Seven o’clock in the evening.
After dinner, the New Year’s Eve party began.
It was said that the program team had prepared many wonderful performances, so most of the sailors sat eagerly on the training ground, all upright and proper, looking forward to the start of the shows.
But Flossie Wright deliberately chose the very back seat.
Flossie had little interest in such performances.
Listening to the host’s polite opening remarks, Flossie only felt sleepy until the military songs began to play, which slightly revived her spirits.
She didn’t last two minutes before she grew sleepy again.
Despite that, her back remained ramrod straight, and apart from her narrowed eyes, everything else about her was indistinguishable from those around her.
"Flossie Wright."
A pleasant voice suddenly rang in her ear.
Warm and cheerful, it was also quite familiar.
Austin Shepherd.
Lifting her eyelids a bit, Flossie shifted her gaze upward and caught a glimpse of the face of the person standing beside her.
Under the soft light, Austin Shepherd’s handsome face was clearly visible, and the concealed smile in his gentle eyes added many points to his charm.
"What’s up?" Flossie asked, frowning slightly.
"I need you to come with me for a bit," Austin said to her with a smile.
"We can leave?" Opening her eyes fully, Flossie tilted her head.
"Yes, we can."
Austin nodded affirmatively.
After speaking, he walked towards the edge of the training ground, holding the program in his hand.
After a moment of thought, Flossie pressed her hand to her forehead and then stood up, joining him in leaving.
It wasn’t until they reached an empty space that the music’s volume began to fade.
Austin stopped.
Stopping as well, Flossie immediately asked, "What’s the matter?"
Turning around, Austin, with an unchanged expression, said, "You can go now."
"Aren’t you sleepy? You can go back now."
"Did you help me?" Flossie was slightly puzzled.
"Sort of," Austin replied with a smile.
Flossie raised an eyebrow.
That word could turn out to be problematic.
"Yes," Austin nodded as he explained, "Rowdy Brightwill asked me to help you."
Flossie had been in a drowsy state ever since she sat down, clearly not interested in the event, and even Austin had noticed it, let alone Rowdy Brightwill.
Fortunately, Austin was part of the evening’s planning, which made him partially responsible for it.
So taking away one or two people wouldn’t be an issue.
Flossie responded thoughtfully.
After thinking for another moment, Austin continued, "There’s another thing."
"Rowdy also wants to go to Aaron Doom, and the Captain has already agreed."
"With us?" Flossie inquired.
"Yes," Austin nodded.
"For me?" She raised an eyebrow again.
"Yes," Austin admitted without evasion.
"I understand," Flossie said with a quite serious expression, then asked, "What do you want to say?"
Austin’s gaze lingered on her, but he still wore a broad smile, "He’s my brother, and I hope he doesn’t get too worn out."
His tone was relaxed, not imposing any obligation on Flossie.
It was merely a symbolic piece of advice for Flossie.
Austin had a way of talking that always made people feel at ease.
"I’ll try," Flossie accepted.
Rowdy Brightwill...
She really didn’t want to burden him.
But then again, she couldn’t decide his life for him.
"Thank you," Austin said, his tone gracious.
This was still for his brother’s sake.
Flossie intended to leave but gave Austin another look and paused, "I heard you also received their invitation before?"
"That did happen," Austin answered evasively.
"Why didn’t you go?" Flossie asked.
"I’m not cut out for that place," Austin said lightly, then smiled at her, "I’m not suited for killing."
This reason suited him very well.
Flossie accepted it.
Nodding at him, Flossie turned and walked away.
The songs grew fainter and more distant.
Flossie walked for a long time, and upon reaching the door of the cooking class, she looked up at the night sky.
The stars were scattered, and the night was beautiful.
Tomorrow would be a brand new start.
But of course, before that, she had to say her goodbyes.
