Subconsciously hearing the approaching rumbling sound, Flossie Wright, without any hesitation, took a deep breath and propelled herself quickly into the sea without even pausing to assess the situation.
Waves as high as mountains crashed down on her, obliterating the raindrops and scattering them into oblivion. The powerful roars belonged to the raging sea. As Flossie Wright descended to about thirty feet, the monstrous waves struck the surface viciously, causing unexpected splashes and waves to manifest an unimaginable destructive force.
Flossie hadn’t quite dived deep enough and was unexpectedly impacted by the encroaching waves. She was instantly swept away to a great distance. Fortunately, she kept her breath steady from beginning to end. When she felt the turbulent waters calming somewhat, she realized her diving light above her head had been swept away to who knows where.
She did not linger in the darkness of the ocean. Overhead there was no hint of light, and the cold aura gnawed at her marrow as if ready to entrap her permanently. Flossie’s nerves were strained but she didn’t panic. Maintaining a steady breath, she began to ascend, gauging the pressure around her and estimating her depth, considering how to return to the surface most efficiently.
She held her breath and swam upward for quite a while, with the brightness of the surface gradually coming into view. Nonetheless, guided by the faint light, she glimpsed a figure sliding by at a distance. Without thinking she froze, but instantly altered her trajectory and rushed directly towards the shadow.
She saw a hand hanging down, its form grotesquely different from that of an ordinary person.
A chill ran through her heart, and as Flossie drew nearer, she reached out and grabbed the waist of what appeared to be a student, and without any delay propelled them both upwards.
She had used up her oxygen and couldn’t stay underwater any longer.
Clinging to the cold body, the person allowed Flossie to grab hold and didn’t move. The chill caused Flossie’s fingers to slightly contract and her knuckles turned white.
Emerging to the familiar sound of water splashes, Flossie finally reached the surface. Despite the ache in her chest from holding her breath for so long, her mood was far from relaxed now that she was back at the surface.
She had also brought up a dead body.
There was no need to check for signs of life or initiate life-saving measures. She had a keen awareness for the living. From the moment she saw the student, she knew there was no sign of life.
He was already dead.
With her head bowed slightly, Flossie studied the face of the student, characterized by an expression of panic. His wide-open eyes radiated a pallid deathly gaze as if he hadn’t had the time to comprehend that his life had been taken away. His skin had turned pale from being soaked, but...
He was very young.
Also, he was Janice Wood’s cousin.
Flossie hadn’t met him before. Having seen a lot of death, she couldn’t express too many feelings.
Yet, she understood the sorrow accompanying the departure of a loved one. It’s an emotion she still despised to this day. Even though the young man before her was unrelated to her, the unexplainable emotion that engulfed her in such situations was impossible to ignore.
Flossie didn’t have to swim for long with the body before Rowdy Brightwill, who was part of her search team, emerged from the water. On spotting her, he visibly exhaled in relief but froze at the sight of the person she was dragging along.
"Did you find him?"
Rowdy Brightwill pursed his lips and asked, but inwardly he must have guessed some part of the grim truth.
