It’s three in the morning.
Becca Reyes, thirsty in her sleep, got up in the middle of the night to get a drink of water, walking sleepily in her slippers to pour herself a glass.
The sound of water being poured was particularly jarring in the silent dormitory.
Becca Reyes gradually became more awake.
Just as she finished pouring hot water into her cup, she shivered suddenly, her back tingling with an icy sensation.
She put down the kettle and turned to glance behind her, but there was nothing amiss in sight.
All the beds were still, the dormitory empty and echoingly quiet, with no traces of anyone else.
She hesitated, took a few puzzled steps towards the window until she reached Flossie Wright’s bed. It was then that she finally realized what was wrong.
Becca Reyes was flabbergasted.
Moonlight streamed in from the window, falling directly on Flossie Wright’s bed, presenting a clearly visible view.
Belinda Nichols, usually a calm and composed sleeper, was now entangled with Flossie like an octopus, fast asleep with her eyes tightly closed, her face nearly nuzzled against Flossie’s ear. It was an incredibly ungraceful sleeping position.
A blanket was draped haphazardly over both of them, their upper bodies mostly exposed to the air.
Flossie, on the other hand, lay straight, completely still as she had been before sleep claimed her.
She hadn’t been sleeping at all.
Her slender eyes were slightly open, reflecting the gentle moonlight as if mirroring the twinkling stars in the night sky.
A panorama of light, dazzling yet chilling.
But, the chill was bone-deep.
The force of her gaze trained on Becca Reyes was threatening, a fact that made Becca shiver involuntarily.
"Well, you really are a good person."
Becca’s heart pounded, but she couldn’t help but want to chuckle.
She remembers how she used to pester Flossie to share her bed, following so many rules. Not getting too close to her, not stealing her blanket, not encroaching on her space...
In short, there were countless regulations.
Belinda Nichols had successfully broken all of Flossie’s rules.
"Enough with the chattering."
Flossie shot Becca Reyes a frosty glare.
The hint was evident: get this thing off me.
"Alright, alright, right away."
Nodding hypocritically at Flossie, Becca’s false smile didn’t falter.
Thus, Becca Reyes bravely faced Flossie’s icy stare.
She might have been insolent with her words, but her actions did not hesitate. Setting down her cup, Becca carefully approached the girls, gently peeling the deeply sleeping Belinda off of Flossie.
She was exceedingly careful, starting with Belinda’s hand, moving it away gently so as to not wake her.
Two minutes later, Belinda Nichols was finally out of Flossie’s bed.
Becca Reyes heaved a sigh of relief.
The next moment, a shadow flashed in her peripheral vision—Flossie had pushed herself up from the bed, swinging over Belinda’s body to land softly on the dormitory floor.
"Where are you going?"
Becca grabbed at Flossie’s arm reflexively.
In the moonlight, Flossie lazily lifted her eyes, her voice clearly decisive, "To sleep."
As the echo of her words faded, she shrugged off Becca’s hand and darted over to Belinda’s bed. It took only two seconds before she was under the covers, eyes closed, lost in sleep.
After a moment of consideration, Becca decided not to bother her further.
After all, they all needed a good rest.
Standing by the table, sipping her lukewarm water, Becca couldn’t help but glance at the sleeping Flossie, a trace of indescribable melancholy filling her heart.
