"Good morning."
Ever since Becca Reyes found out about Janice Wood’s heroic feat of taking on several female soldiers bare-handed, her fondness for Janice had been on a steady rise. They had run into each other a few times in the cafeteria these past few days, becoming quite familiar with one another.
"Good morning!" Janice replied with a nod and a smile, looking quite happy. After a while, she turned to Flossie Wright and asked, "The instructor said you two have an assessment today, and if you pass, you’ll join us in training. Is that true?"
Flossie responded calmly.
Becca Reyes looked at her with a playful sideways glance, finding this female soldier amusing. Teasingly, she asked, "So, not excited?"
"No, not at all." Janice Wood immediately shook her head, her eyes squinting into crescent moons, "I’m looking forward to it."
"Aren’t you afraid we may fail the assessment?" Becca Reyes raised an eyebrow, not letting Janice off the hook.
"I, I don’t know." Janice blinked, facing Becca Reyes with a very serious expression, "But Flossie will surely pass."
Becca Reyes’ mouth twitched slightly and she nearly stumbled. Was she being disdained?
Caught off guard, Becca Reyes instinctively studied Janice’s expression, noting more joy and confidence than she had anticipated.
Though she didn’t know the exact reason, it could be that Janice felt a sense of belonging with someone else who also felt isolated, or perhaps she genuinely hoped that Flossie would become stronger. Either way, she was certainly very excited about the opportunity for Flossie to join their training.
Moreover, she had an unreasoning belief in Flossie, as if no matter how difficult a task was, Flossie could always handle it - much like an ardent fan.
However, this was quite nice.
Actually finding this straightforward and sincere female soldier quite endearing, Becca Reyes bypassed Flossie and approached Janice. Her tone casual, as if making small talk, she languidly suggested to Janice, "Hey, how about we make a bet?"
Janice looked at her in surprise.
Becca Reyes raised an eyebrow, smiling as she asked, "Not interested?"
"Go on." Janice replied with caution, her serious tone making her look rather formal.
"Here’s the deal," Becca’s voice gradually became more serious. She glanced at Flossie who had shown no interest in their conversation, and then began to persuade Janice, "If Flossie can beat me in the assessment, meaning if she performs better than I do, you owe me a favor. Deal?"
Janice looked at her sceptically, not fully trusting her.
She had heard of Becca Reyes during her time with the new recruits and had a vague memory of her. But she had always thought Flossie was no less capable than Becca Reyes...
After a pause, Janice bluntly retorted, "Isn’t it normal for her to win?"
Becca Reyes was left speechless. So she really had bumped into a fanatical fan?
Suddenly feeling an inexplicable irritation, Becca Reyes was just about to vent to Flossie when she noticed that Flossie had already taken off, with several hundred meters’ lead over both her and Janice.
Janice and Becca Reyes shared a knowing glance and promptly sped up to catch up with Flossie, not continuing any further conversation.
Their morning exercise didn’t last long. Just after Janice and Becca Reyes had finished their warm-up, Instructor Nathan Foster blew his whistle to gather all the new recruits, then led them in single file to the dining hall for a meal.
