"Is there anything to eat?"
As Flossie Wright lay prone in the grass, she pushed up her helmet and then asked Sandy Cruz to her right.
Glancing at her, Sandy threw over a pack of compressed biscuits.
Flossie gladly accepted them.
Just yesterday, half of her rations were confiscated during a "frisk" by Glenn Hutchinson, and the rest she had shared with Becca Reyes.
If it weren’t for Sandy’s assistance, she reckoned she would need to take out one or two Blue Army Members to get enough food to fill her stomach.
As for water...
On this island, there were water resources everywhere; they were not lacking.
After giving a portion to Flossie, Sandy also handed one to Mariana Buck, and the three of them ate some dry rations on the spot.
"Let’s take turns on watch."
Once the three had finished eating, Sandy spoke in a deep voice.
"You direct."
Flossie handed over the task of assigning the watch to Sandy.
"It’s nine now; everyone takes a three-hour shift. You first, then me, and you..." Halfway through his sentence, Sandy tilted his head and looked over at Mariana Buck on the right.
"I’ll take the third shift."
Mariana picked up the conversation.
Flossie took a sip of water but kept an eye on the other two from her peripheral vision.
Since meeting Mariana, Flossie had not heard her speak more than ten sentences.
Even Sandy, who was usually on the quieter side, would still occasionally exchange a few words with her.
Flossie was a bit puzzled, after all—
She believed she wasn’t specifically targeting Mariana; even when they were in the same Dormitory, they rarely interacted, so Flossie could not understand this standoffish attitude whenever they met.
"Night Vision Goggles." Flossie extended her hand to Sandy.
Sandy passed her the Night Vision Goggles.
After donning the Night Vision Goggles, Flossie collected some fresh weeds and gave them to Sandy to replace the wilted grass from the afternoon.
Then she resumed her prone position and continued monitoring the situation.
She was dressed in a sniper’s ghillie suit, which allowed her to blend seamlessly into the environment without the need for additional camouflage.
Sandy refreshed his camouflage with new weeds and handed some to Mariana. Mariana hesitated but eventually took them.
Both of them lay down to rest one after another.
That night, Flossie was on watch for three hours and didn’t detect any movement.
And when Sandy and Mariana took their turns on watch, Flossie heard no trace of movement even in her light sleep.
Until the next day at six in the morning—
"Bang bang bang—"
"Bang bang bang—"
"Bang bang bang—"
The disorderly sound of Gunfire caught the attention of all three.
Flossie and Sandy, who had been sleeping with one eye open, instantly awoke and, in the seconds before they were fully alert, had their rifles in hand.
Load, pull the trigger, aim.
In an instant, their eyes were clear and sharp.
Meanwhile, Mariana, who had gotten up with her rifle, saw the others’ coordinated actions and couldn’t help but twitch at the corner of her mouth.
"Nine o’clock direction, about seven hundred meters away," Flossie, now fully awake, turned her head slightly to speak to Sandy.
Sandy looked at her.
Then, the two of them rose from the ground.
The wilted weeds fell away with their movements.
"Shall we go?" Flossie tilted her head, seeking confirmation from Sandy.
Of course, this was merely a formality.
"Let’s go."
Seeing her, Sandy nodded.
Mariana stood stiffly to one side.
She had barely any chance to speak.
