Halting his steps, Hutchinson Flynn Reid glanced at Flossie Wright, calling out to her in a clear voice.
He didn’t really expect her agreement, but rather, he looked at her with an anticipatory look, hoping that she as the "adult" would step in to help him shake off this crybaby stranger of a girl.
However, Flossie Wright sneered and smiled at him, saying, "Go play."
A look of shock froze over Hutchinson Flynn Reid’s face, evidently deeply hurt by Flossie’s words.
Left with no choice, Hutchinson Flynn Reid let out a heavy sigh and allowed the little girl to lead him away to play what he considered to be a ridiculously childish game.
When Glenn Hutchinson returned with two cotton candy sticks, he passed by Flynn Reid who was squat apart and playing with the little girl. Seeing hope ignite in Flynn’s eyes, he looked at Glenn with anticipation. Unexpectedly, after a mere glance, Glenn walked away without paying any attention to his hopeful gaze.
Thus, under the little girl’s tugging, Flynn lowered his head again in defeat.
Standing at the stone steps, Glenn looked at Flossie who was sitting under the tree shadow. Their eyes met mid-air, and in that instant, he handed her one of the cotton candies.
Her sight was suddenly obstructed by a cloud of white cotton candy. Flossie spared a glance, but did not refuse. She calmly accepted it.
The idea of eating cotton candy was Flynn’s. The mission of buying it naturally fell onto Glenn. But Flossie did not expect him to buy two.
The fluffy and sweet cotton candy melted in her mouth, its sweetness spreading across her taste buds.
Flossie didn’t particularly like sweet things.
Her tastes were bland, she could even accept vegetables cooked in water without any seasoning, but she disliked sour, sweet, bitter, or spicy flavors.
However, she was never overly resistant to anything.
It was just her habit. As long as it wasn’t something that would kill her to eat or do, she could accept it even if she didn’t like it.
She had many weaknesses, but those were not things she choose to show in front of others.
"Don’t like it?"
Glenn sat down beside her and observed her emotionless face as she took a bite of the cotton candy.
"It’s okay."
Seeing Flynn dealing with the little girl, Flossie responded casually.
After a brief pause, Flossie glanced at Glenn, "How did Flynn come to be here?"
Flossie had not deliberately looked into Flynn’s background, but one thing she could be sure of was that Flynn was not Glenn’s biological child.
They didn’t interact much in the past, and she didn’t want to ask.
Often, the more one knows, the more responsibility one has to bear.
The saying goes "Curiosity killed the cat," so to avoid getting tied down by too much, she had to suppress her curiosity.
But she genuinely liked this child who was gentle, considerate, understanding, and well-behaved. She didn’t mind taking on the burden of a child’s past.
Glenn gazed at the little figure, his stern eyes softened significantly upon seeing Flynn’s cold face.
"Son of a friend," his cool voice paused, "His mother entrusted him to me before she died."
The story was not complicated.
The friend was one of his comrades. He didn’t call him a "comrade" because he betrayed their trust at a critical moment.
