"Thanks." Flossie Wright didn’t stand on ceremony, got up with the weighty lead piece in her grip, her gaze lingering on a pair of sunglasses for a moment.
The shopkeeper, who seemed to know what was going on everywhere, without a word, promptly passed her the sunglasses, "This one’s on the house."
Following that, the shopkeeper swiftly placed both the sunglasses and the weighty lead piece into a bag and handed it over enthusiastically. Flossie sauntered out of the shop, and it was then that the shopkeeper exhaled a sigh of relief.
The day had just dawned.
Flossie’s silhouette cut a stark figure against the light, her demeanor undiminished. As she came up to the counter, she hesitated, dropping a handful of red banknotes onto the counter. Her actions were crisp and authoritative—an effortless show of dominance. She was coolness personified.
"No need for change."
The shopkeeper barely caught her say this as he came back to his senses. She was already out on the street. His heart skipped a beat, and he hurriedly moved towards the counter, finding a pile of hundred-dollar bills.
He didn’t even bother counting. The money was enough to offset his losses for the past two days.
When Flossie arrived at the Vegetable Market, Yvonne Watson was being hassled by Nigel Ferguson. To Flossie’s amusement, Nigel was playing the "protector" to prevent Yvonne from being "harassed". You could even say he was coming to her rescue. Yvonne, who usually avoided Nigel like the plague, was simply left looking awkward, unable to express her annoyance at him.
But, there were limits to being persistent. When Flossie approached them, she gave Nigel a sign, and Nigel wisely stepped back, bidding Yvonne farewell with a smile.
"All done shopping?" Flossie raised an eyebrow at Yvonne, her threatening aura retracting.
Yvonne wasn’t pleased with Flossie leaving her alone to run her errands, responding coldly. If it weren’t for fear of Flossie’s vengeance, she would have turned her in long ago.
"Let’s go then."
Flossie said flippantly, clearly not intending to help push the shopping trolley, and breezed off in the direction of home with her bag in hand.
Pushing her trolley both ways upset Yvonne’s balance. As Nigel was about to leave, he saw Yvonne’s rushed and annoyed demeanor and Flossie’s carefree and nonchalant departure, and realized something.
After a moment’s hesitation, Nigel awkwardly smiled at Yvonne, "Do you want some help?"
Thanks to his unexpected assistance, a surprised Yvonne quickly nodded in gratitude, saying, "Thank...thank you."
Along the way, Flossie led the way with Yvonne and Nigel trailing behind, chatting and laughing. As a rather ordinary young woman, although Yvonne didn’t like Nigel, she naturally started to show off a bit when being helped by a man. Her normally soft voice rose slightly, the sound of her laughter trailing after them, seemingly attempting to catch Flossie’s attention, flaunting her status.
Meanwhile, Flossie, accompanied by the sound of Yvonne’s laughter, could think of nothing other than silencing Yvonne’s relentless boasting.
Of course, Nigel wasn’t allowed into the military district. The moment they reached the entrance, Flossie took over, pushing the shopping cart towards the cooking class. As they covered the short, ten-minute distance, Yvonne continued to revisit her conversation with Nigel, her constant bragging not showing any signs of stopping. Despite being completely ignored by Flossie, Yvonne interpreted it as Flossie being envious. She chattered away incessantly, right up until they arrived at the cooking class, where her talking finally ceased reluctantly.
Unsurprisingly, Flossie delegated the task of carrying the groceries to Yvonne, and went straight into the kitchen to inform Team Leader Lin of Glenn Hutchinson’s request for a late-night snack.
"Oh, Glenn has already told me about that," Team leader Lin said, with no sense of surprise. He looked at Flossie quizzically, his tone turning grave, "He also said that you volunteered to prepare his late-night snack at your own expense. Let me remind you, there are a plethora of women pursuing him. You need to know your place. I suggest you handle his late-night snacks from now on, just remember to stay in line."
Flossie hesitated for a moment, it finally clicking that Glenn Hutchinson was not only tricking her but framing her as another one of his pursuers. Annoyance flashed across her eyes.
This guy...really is a rascal and a bastard!
What a jerk!
