But in a blink of an eye, the rain started pouring down.
The sentinels were still stationed and the scouts were still scouting. Only those who were idle took the opportunity to leisurely seek shelter in the tent, grabbing a few packs of compressed biscuits for their dinner as the rain cascaded heavily down.
However, during such tense times, such indolent behavior was bound to arouse discontent.
"Flossie Wright, Becca Reyes!"
The night had just fallen when a voice came shout from outside the tent, calling out loud as if fearing that others wouldn’t hear. Despite the rain blanketing all other sounds, the shouts could still be heard loud and clear.
"What’s all the shouting about?"
Becca Reyes, wearing a raincoat, came out of the tent, looking at Neal Thompson who was standing outside. She instinctively furrowed her brows at him.
She knew that Neal Thompson had always disliked them.
However, they were under the protection of their squad leader in their cooking class, upon completing their duties, Neal Thompson had nothing to criticize them for, so he had never been able to pick on them.
Having been prepared to confront Neal Thompson during this exercise, Becca wasn’t surprised to see him standing in front of her, full of bluster.
Anyway, they were in for some difficulties...
"Seeing how idle you two are, without even bringing extra food," Neal Thompson glared at Becca Reyes, who obviously didn’t take him seriously. He gritted his teeth, continuing to speak, "There’s plenty to eat in this jungle, you and Flossie Wright can go find it now."
Becca Reyes almost laughed at this absurdity. The rain was splattering against her raincoat, she amusedly looked at Neal Thompson, "Where do you expect us to find food at this late hour?!"
"You call yourselves cooks but can’t even forage for food?! You are not ashamed of being idle here?!" Neal propped himself up, "I don’t care how you manage it, but if you fail to find food, don’t bother coming back tonight!"
Pausing, Neal’s eyes flashed with threatening tension as he slowly enunciated, "This is an order!"
Meanwhile, Flossie Wright, after hearing all the conversation, also came out of the tent.
Seeing Neal’s instigating demeanor, she slightly frowned, yet remained silent, standing beside Becca Reyes.
"And what if we refuse?"
Becca Reyes stared at Neal defeiantly, involuntarily clenching her fists.
However, before she could take action, Flossie lightly touched her, signaling her not to act recklessly.
The punishment for attacking comrades in arms was severe, especially in these circumstances...
They would definitely end up the sufferers.
"You refuse?" Neal snickered, his tone taking a harsh turn, "Then get lost and seek shelter with your squad leader!"
Within the Forces, any order, no matter how harsh, must be obeyed once hung with the words "order", otherwise it is considered disobedience!
Without a doubt, Neal was intentionally picking on them. He abhorred both Flossie Wright and Becca Reyes, especially Flossie, who had snatched the object of his affection. When they were in the cooking class, he couldn’t find a fault with them. Now, if he didn’t seize this opportunity to teach them a lesson, he might as well reverse his name!
Becca Reyes’ clenched fists tightened once more, only to loosen unexpectedly. She shook her wrists, her face which was filled with indignation now turned into a smile, "Alright, we’ll go forage."
Standing next to her, Flossie’s eyes flickered. Under the dim light, her gaze deepened. Yet, from beginning to end, she remained calm, seemingly not taking Neal’s provocations to heart.
Neal’s face changed slightly. In his speculation, Becca Reyes and Flossie Wright wouldn’t agree so readily.
But it was just as well, saving him unnecessary effort.
"Let’s go together."
A gentle voice came from the rainy curtain. In the sound of dropping rainwater, it was particularly pleasing.
Becca Reyes instinctively paused, directing her gaze towards the voice. She saw Calvin Ramos and Stuart Weston, both wearing raincoats, guns slung on their shoulders. They approached with serious expressions that voided the usually gentle demeanor of Calvin.
She hesitated, with no anticipation as before.
As for Flossie, she merely glanced at them and nodded naturally, "Hmm."
Having company was not bad.
Seeing Calvin and Stuart, Neal’s face clouded again. He savagely glared at Flossie and imperceptibly muttered ’vixen’, before storming off.
Over here, as soon as Neal had left, Stuart Weston began to roll up his sleeves. Before Becca could speak, he motioned to them with great enthusiasm, "Let’s go, we need to find some food!"
Becca Reyes swallowed the thank-you she was about to voice. As she met Calvin’s gaze, his demeanor seemed unchanged, so she nodded at him as usual and followed Stuart unhurriedly.
Flossie was always quiet. She followed a few steps behind, but after assessing the surroundings, she went back to the tent to retrieve two guns before catching up with the others.
The jungle was extremely quiet at night.
Only the sound of rain could be heard.
Just as Flossie and the others were moving out of the campsite, Austin Shepherd, fiddling with his military laptop in the tent, suddenly heard three words in his earpiece—
"They moved."
