"Why didn’t you die?!"
Aunt Lee desperately pushed Janice Wood, driving her back several steps towards the sea. She cried out loudly, her voice filled with sorrow and hoarseness, as if she wanted to vent all her emotions.
This action was somewhat sudden, and the surrounding people hadn’t reacted yet, watching her go crazy, pushing an expressionless Janice backwards into the incoming waves, which swamped them up to their waists.
But, Aunt Lee’s rage hadn’t ended. Seemingly tired, she let go of Janice’s collar, but in the next moment raised her hand to slap her across the face.
"Smack——"
The loud noise, amid the sea and rain sounds, came across as particularly harsh and jarring.
Janice’s face was forcefully turned aside, her pale cheeks immediately turned red with the imprint of a slap. However, Janice didn’t even furrow her brows, as if all her emotions had been drained, unresponsive to the outside world.
Her face was pale, her eyes empty, standing in the water like a puppet, motionless.
The sea began to recede again. But the two people standing in the frigid, piercing sea water remained trapped in their emotions, not moving at all. Janice showed no reaction whatsoever, allowing Aunt Lee’s angry pushes and curses without a word of reply, while Aunt Lee, at the end of her tether, grabbed her shoulders, shaking her violently, her crying increasingly desperate.
"You can save others, why couldn’t you save James?! Huh?!"
Aunt Lee cried, her fists pounding Janice’s body ruthlessly as if trying to vent all suffering and resentment on this innocent girl before her.
There were so many others alive, why was it her son that had to die?
If Janice had gone to save him earlier, would the outcome have been different?
She preferred Janice’s life in an exchange for her son. She wanted her son alive, not a lifeless corpse.
So, why didn’t Janice die instead?
The soldiers around were shocked by her actions. They saw her pounding Janice as if she didn’t care about anything. The force she used could be seen from far away. What shocked them was that any normal person would dodge in such a situation, even if they didn’t fight back - Janice could have avoided her, too. But what nobody expected was that she did not dodge, she silently took all the hits with an expressionless face.
Her expression had been numbed.

The soldiers, who were excessively amazed, didn’t rush to save her right away. By the time they reacted, Flossie Wright and Rowdy Brightwill were already making their way towards them.
"You’re living, but what use is that? Consuming our food, living in our house, being taken good care of but what are you doing in return? You left to be a soldier! Didn’t you see, all your neighbours are cursing you for your ingratitude! Go ahead, be a soldier! I don’t care if you don’t respect me afterwards, but can you please bring my son back to me? As a soldier, you should save lives; James was not an ordinary person, he was your cousin!"
Aunt Lee, neurotically murmuring, didn’t spare any force in her hands. Suddenly, her hands grabbed onto Janice’s throat. Her own face was extremely flushed, as if she was determined to choke Janice to death.
The rain had drenched her completely, her loose hair sticking to her face. Her once comely face was almost twisted beyond recognition, her eyes exposed a ruthless and cruel light, not hiding her hatred and madness within. Her drenched clothes clung to her body, her rather thin figure seemed like it could collapse at any moment; it was shaky and frail.
