"Good day, Brigadier, Instructor!"
Flossie Wright salutes both men inside, after formally greeting, she lowers her hand, standing erect and looking at the man behind the desk. With not a hint of fear or timidity in her beautiful, narrow eyes, there’s only tranquility and calm confidence. Even in face of this seasoned man, there is no sign of retreat.
"Flossie Wright, right?" The Brigadier gives her a thorough look, noting her possible hurried arrival right after the exercise, his expression softens. He nods slightly, "Come and sit here, I want to discuss something with you."
Thus, after exchanging glances with him, Flossie walks towards the chair on the other side of the desk and sits down naturally.
This unperturbed action nearly stunned the secretary standing at the door.
In recent years, this is the first time he has seen a new recruit remaining so composed in front of the Brigadier. Normally, others would be stuttering out of nervousness, let alone a female soldier...
"What’s the matter?"
Flossie sits upright, but not overly rigid. Even though her posture seems perfect, it always gives people a sense of her unique personality.
After careful consideration, she proceeds to ask a question, her attitude no different from how she usually interacts with others.
Austin Shepherd, standing beside her, brings his fist to his mouth and coughs softly, clearly throwing a glancing look at Flossie, silently hinting her to show some caution.
"What are you coughing for," the Brigadier disregards Flossie’s tone and gives Austin a cool sidelong glance, showing his absolute disdain, "stop messing around. If you have nothing to do, just stand properly!"
"Yes, sir!"
Austin Shepherd purses his lips, winks at Flossie, and then stands rigidly in a salute with a serious expression on his face.
"Good for you," Seeing his actions, the Brigadier starts chuckling and points at him weakly, "I dare you to stand like this until noon!"
"Erm..." Austin hesitates and looks at him, with a worried expression on his face, "Erm, Sir, don’t you have an exercise report to hand over at noon..."
"Go!" The Brigadier chuckles, "Pour me a cup of tea!"
Austin Shepherd grins, and also gives Flossie smug look, hinting her to improve her attitude.
However, Flossie’s demeanor improves after this interaction. The Brigadier seems approachable and not as serious as he initially seemed.
In the current Forces, people with higher ranks hold substantial authority. The Brigadier is of a much higher rank than Austin Shepherd. His openness and approachability in front of his subordinates is rare and this moderately changes Flossie’s impression of him.
"Have some tea."
In a short while, Austin Shepherd prepares two cups of tea, placing them in front of the Brigadier and Flossie. After he completes his task, he stands back by the Brigadier’s side.
Observing the much-dedicated Austin, the secretary who was standing at the door all this time, contemplates and finally decides to quietly leave.
"You’ve been juggling the cooking class and training. Is it manageable?"
After taking a sip of his tea, the Brigadier turns to Flossie and asks in a calm tone that reveals no hidden intentions.
However, as soon as he speaks, Flossie has a rough idea of what he might be suggesting.
It seems that the Brigadier’s proposal is similar to those made by Bard Walker and Glenn Hutchinson - to transfer her from the cooking class.
But while she understands why Bard might do this, as he has his close ties with Glenn and has shown interest in her before. What she doesn’t understand is why would the Brigadier, who is in charge of the entire Cameron Bailey and countless soldiers under his command, single her out. After all, as a new recruit, unless she builds a reputation for herself, there is no way she would catch the Brigadier’s attention.
Flossie subconsciously glances towards Austin Shepherd.
As if he knows what she’s wondering, Austin Shepherd shrugs innocently, distancing himself from the situation.
"It’s okay."
After contemplating briefly, Flossie gives a rather nonchalant response.
The Brigadier’s gaze rests on her, showing a trace of solemnity, but again relaxes soon after. "I’ve been observing your performance in the drills, you’ve done exceptionally well," the Brigadier said with a meaningful pause.
In fact, calling Flossie in had not been due to Austin. During the exercise, the Brigadier was informed that someone had seized control of Blue Army’s Mi-17 Helicopter, resulting in three instantaneous casualties. The ability to destroy Mi-17 Helicopter would have been impressive enough, let alone seizing control of it. Out of curiosity, he asked a few idle soldiers to investigate, and unexpectedly discovered that two newly enlisted Navy recruits, one of them a woman from the cooking class, were involved. He paid attention.

Right after the exercise, when Austin Shepherd reported to him as a practice, he asked for more information. The information from Austin made him more intrigued.
The new recruit was not just a female soldier, but also from the cooking class.
He couldn’t help but take this seriously!
Without giving it much thought, the Brigadier had Flossie summoned. Realizing that something was up, Austin Shepherd creatively narrated Flossie’s performance during the exercise to the Brigadier. Although the Brigadier was skeptical, his fondness for Flossie increased.
"Thank you."
Flossie narrows her eyes, responding politely but distantly.
Ever since Bard discussed the matter with her, she has had some idea about it.
However, she isn’t sure about it yet.
Observing every reaction of Flossie, the Brigadier estimates her personality and decides not to beat around the bush. He directly asks, "I’ll just ask you one thing, do you want to leave the cooking class and officially join their new recruit training?"
Flossie looks up at him. Her expression is calm, but she doesn’t respond immediately.
Meanwhile, Austin Shepherd is also studying Flossie thoughtfully, somewhat intrigued.
He has never really understood Flossie as they haven’t interacted much. He is, however, sure that Flossie does not have a strong desire for new recruit training. While she seems to have integrated well into the group, she remains distant. It’s apparent that she is not very fond of this place.
Therefore, whatever response she gives, Austin won’t be surprised.
